Head Coach: Alfred Johnson
Alfred Johnson is entering his seventh season as the head coach of the Holy Family University men’s basketball program. Johnson has established Holy Family as one of the top teams in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) since his arrival in 2003. The Tigers have won at least 17 games in five of Johnson’s first six years. The team made the conference playoffs every year under Johnson’s direction.
Johnson has a 98-79 record at Holy Family and an overall record of 140-140. His achievements include being named the CACC Coach of the Year and the Philadelphia Small College Coach of the Year in 2004-05. Also that season, Johnson led his Tigers to a top 25 ranking, reached the eighth-spot in the poll. In 2005, Johnson’s team gained an ECAC post-season invite.
Last season, Holy Family went 8-20 overall and reached the CACC Championship Tournament. Justin Swidowski earned CACC and ECAC rookie of the year honors.
During the 2007-08 season, the Tigers posted a 21-10 record, the most wins for Holy Family since going Division II. That team also advanced to the NCAA Northeast Regional Tournament for the first time.
In September 2008, Johnson began a four-year term as the East Region Chairperson of the NCAA Division II ranking committee. Johnson previously served as a ranking committee person at the Division III level while at St. Mary’s College.
Johnson has coached nine players whom have been recognized by the CACC, including the 2007-08 CACC Player of the Year, Michael Sturns. Sturns is also the first All-American at Holy Family since the program went Division II.
Prior to coming to Holy Family, Johnson spent four years as the head men’s basketball coach at St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM). His best season was the 2000-01 season, when his team complied an 18-8 record. During his tenure at SMCM, Johnson coached a Division III All-American, a Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year, several All-Conference performers, and three of the top-10 scorers in program history. Two of his former players, Sheldon Taylor and Brandon Jones, have been enshrined into St. Mary’s College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Before becoming the head coach at SMCM, Johnson served as an assistant coach at Manor Junior College (1990-91), Elizabeth City State (1991-95), Alabama State University (1995-96), Tennessee State University (1996-97) and under the tutelage of coaching icon Ben Jobe at Tuskegee University (1997-99).
Johnson began his coaching career at his alma mater, Germantown Friends School (GFS) in Philadelphia, Pa. At GFS, Johnson served as the head coach from 1985-90 and led the Tigers to a 67-42 record. During his stay, his team won the Friends League Championship in 1989 and he coached the school’s only McDonald’s All- American in Jonathan Haynes.
Johnson graduated from Germantown Friends in 1979 where he played for head coach David Felsen, his mentor and current Headmaster at Friends Central School. As a player, Johnson was a two-time team MVP, two time team captain, two team All-Conference first-team performer. In his senior year, he led his team to a conference championship and gained Honorable Mention All-City honors. Johnson is also a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
Chris Razler
Chris Razler is entering his sixth year as the Tigers top assistant.
Razler is the recruiting coordinator and is responsible for scouting.
He is a Holy Family graduate and scored over 1,000 points and was
a NAIA All-American as a player.

Jay Norman
Jay Norman is going into his fifth year with Holy Family. Norman
spent one year with Johnson at St. Mary’s College before
following him to Holy Family. He is a Big Five Hall of Famer
having played in two Final Fours at Temple University. Norman
is regarded as one of the best big man coaches in the country.

Tim Perry
Tim Perry is in his fourth season. He is responsible for post player
development. Perry was a standout at Temple University. He had
a 12-year pro career, including eight seasons in the NBA with
the Phoenix Suns, Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Nets..
In 1988, Perry was the seventh overall pick by Phoenix in the
NBA Draft. Like Norman, Perry is in the Big Five Hall of Fame.

Mike Mackley
Mike Mackley is in his first season as the assistant to the head
coach. He is responsible for assisting coach Johnson with the day-to-day
duties for the program. Mackley, a Holy Family graduate, spent the
last three seasons as a guard for the team. During his senior year,
he was a team captain. Mackley was a two-time member of the Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference All-Academic team.
