Holy Family University Softball’s Season Ends After Elimination from CACC Championship Tournament (4/30/2009) LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Holy Family University softball team had its 2009 season come to a close after being eliminated from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament on Thursday at Georgian Court University. The Tigers end the season with a 22-28 overall record and a CACC mark of 15-9. This was the team’s second straight appearance in the double-elimination tournament, and sixth overall since the year 2000. Holy Family started the tournament out with a 2-0 loss to fourth-seeded Georgian Court in a first round match-up. The Lions’ Diana Sansevera took control of game one by tossing a complete game one-hitter. She struck out eight batters in the seven innings. Georgian Court scored both of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning with two out hits. Left fielder Mallory Kirchner drove in the first run of the game with a double to left center. Second baseman Rachel Ruch scored on the hit. The next hitter, designated player Brooke Hull, brought in Kirchner with a double to right center. Pitcher Angela DiBeneditto (so. Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) had the Tigers lone hit, a single to right field in the fourth inning. DiBeneditto (11-11) took the loss. She allowed two runs on six hits in six innings. DiBeneditto struck out three hitters. Holy Family took on eighth-seeded Post University in an elimination game. The Tigers jumped out in front 1-0 in the bottom of the first on a one-out single by second baseman Sarah Marsteller (sr. Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun). Shortstop Carly Sippel (fr. Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert’s), who started the inning with a single, scored the run. Post shortstop Samantha Canning knotted the game at one in the third with single to plate first baseman Nicole Gizzi. Canning brought home Gizzi for the second time in the fifth inning, using a two-out single, to put the Eagles ahead, 2-1. Holy Family answered right back with a single run to tie the game at two. Pitcher Jody Searfoss (jr. Weatherly, Pa./Marian Catholic) came through with a two-out RBI base hit to left field that drove in Marsteller. The Eagles scored the eventual game-winning run in the top of the sixth. Right fielder Cassidie Ern connected with a single to left with two down to plate pitcher Stephanie Carrillo. Carrillo took the win in the circle for Post. She scattered 10 hits over seven innings. She struck out five and walked one. Searfoss (11-12) took the loss allowing three runs on seven hits. She struck out two hitters to set the new mark for strikeouts in a season with 155. Searfoss broke her own record of 154 strikeouts in 2008. Marsteller and Sippel led the Tiger offense with two hits each. |
