Holy Family University Men’s Basketball Brings in Six for 2009 (9/4/2009)
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Holy Family University men’s basketball team will have a different look to it going into this season with the signing of six players that were announced by head coach Alfred Johnson on Friday.

Coach Johnson had brought on three transfers Ismaila Traore, Kahlil Mumford and Sam Mushman and three freshmen Khiry Hankins, Matt Kravchuk and Taylor Papion.

“We are very excited about what we feel these young men will bring to our team and our university,” said Johnson. “This group of players, including Rickie Crews (a 6’8” forward who missed last season with an injury), should blend in perfectly with our returning players.

Traore and Mumford join the Tigers after previously playing at Division I St. Peter’s College.

In three seasons as a center for the Peacocks, Traore (6’7”) played in 83 games and averaged two rebounds a game. He also scored 95 points. A native of Mali, Traore played his high school basketball at St. Benedict’s Prep.

Mumford, who is returning home to Philadelphia, recorded 2.9 points per game (ppg) from the guard position in his freshman season. Mumford (5’11”) was the MVP of the Catholic League northern division as a senior at Cardinal Dougherty. The team won the northern division in Mumford’s sophomore and senior seasons.

Mushman, a Tabernacle, N.J. native, spent his freshman campaign at Division II Wingate University. He had nine points and nine rebounds in ten games as a forward with the Bulldogs. In high school, Mushman (6’7”) was a three-time All-Sussex County Interscholastic League and All-County selection at Pope John XXIII. He was the conference and county MVP as a senior when the team won the conference title. Mushman was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder in his final two seasons.

Hankins is a 6’1” guard and comes to Holy Family from Cincinnati, Ohio. At Summit Country Day School, Hankins was the Miami Valley Conference player of the year and named to the All-Southwest District 16 first team as a senior. He was an Academic All-Ohio and All-State nominee. Hankins averaged 13.5 ppg, including 17.7 ppg as a senior, in his high school career.

Kravchuk (6’5”), brother of Tigers redshirt freshman 6’11” center Alex Kravchuk, was a two-time All-Dutchess County player for Webutuck High School. He averaged 21 points, 11 rebounds and five assists per game as a senior.

Papion (5’8") a native of Lafayette, La., was an All-District first team guard for Tuerlings Catholic as a senior. In his final high school season, Papion recorded 15 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals per game. He helped lead Tuerlings Catholic to its first Division 4A playoff game.

This group will join the four returning players to make up this year’s Holy Family men’s basketball squad. Holy Family begins its 2009-10 season on Sunday, November 15 with a home contest against St. Anselm at 2 p.m.
