Gibson Propels Holy Family University Women’s Basketball to 72-71 Win Over La Salle University in Exhibition Contest (11/6/2009) PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Forward Meghan Gibson (jr. Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) connected on a jumper with 4.2 seconds remaining to get the Mark Miller era underway on a positive note as the Holy Family University women’s basketball team defeated Division I La Salle University, 72-71, in an exhibition game on Friday night at Tom Gola Arena. “Defensively, I think we did a great job, making big stops at the end,” said Miller. “Overall we still need to work on, but that was a solid La Salle team who will win a lot. We didn’t show a lot, but I was pleased with how we played.” Tiger forward Catherine Carr (jr. Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) led all scorers with 17 points and added six rebounds. Gibson finished the game with 16 points on 6 of 13 shooting, including 4 of 8 from beyond the arc. Forward Erin Mann (fr. West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria) added nine and five rebounds in a reserve role. Point guard Lauren Peters (so. Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks W.) had six assists, six points and three rebounds. “Our big thing tonight was a lot of different people made big plays,” stated Miller. “Molly Hanlon made two big threes late and Cat was Cat.” For La Salle, forward Morgan Robertson was the leading scorer with 14 points. She was 6 of 8 from the field. Guards Ashley Gale and Jamie Walsh both tallied 11 points. The Explorers were the better shooting team but hitting 51.0 percent of their shots, compared to 34.9 percent for the Tigers. Holy Family won the rebounding battle, 38-34 and committed five less turnovers (14-9). The game got tight after the Explorers went on an 8-1 run to close their gap to a point (49-48) was 12:20 to go. At the 6:49 mark, Gale tied the game up at 59 connected the second of her free throws. Hanlon (fr. Narbeth, Pa./Lower Merion) hit a trey that put the Tigers back up three (62-59). Gibson hit another three-pointer that made the score 67-61 with 5:06 remaining. La Salle went on a 11-3 run to knot the score at 70 with 49 seconds left. The Tigers took a 71-70 lead when forward Nya Daley (sr. Toronto, Ontario, Canada/The Patterson School) hit a free throw. Robertson put the Explorers up 72-71 by connecting on a jumper with 26.4 remaining. The Tigers held a 42-34 lead at the break after controlling most of the first half. Gibson gave Holy Family its first lead with a three-pointer at 17:35. The triple sparked a 15-2 run that allowed the Tigers to move in front by 11 points (17-6) with 12:30 to play in the half. Gibson was responsible for eight points, including the final five. The Explorers fought back to pull within 22-20 on a Nadia Duncan free throw. Holy Family regained an eight-point advantage (40-32) with 1:04 remaining on a Carr jumper. Holy Family, ranked ninth the in Women’s Division II Bulletin and 17th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, opens its 2009-10 regular season on Sunday, November 15 at Bentley University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Dana Center. |
