Holy Family University Men’s Basketball Falls to Indiana (Pa.), 80-74 (11/29/2009)
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Holy Family University men’s basketball team suffered an 80-74 setback to visiting Indiana (Pa.) University in the first ever meeting between the schools on Sunday afternoon at the Campus Center.

For Holy Family (0-4), forward Justin Swidowski led all scorers with a game-high 27 points. He added five rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Guard Kahlil Mumford (so. Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) contributed 21 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Forward Keith Whittington (so. Collingswood, N.J./Collingswood) had eight points and four rebounds.

Indiana (4-0), ranked 11th in the National Association of Basketball Coaches poll, had three players in double-figures. Forward Akida McLain led the Crimson Hawks in scoring with 22 points to go with seven rebounds. Forward Darryl Webb added 16 points, 14 rebounds and four steals. Guard Thomas Young poured in 13 points and grabbed eight boards. Guard Ashton Smith barely missed a triple-double with nine points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

The Tigers were the better shooting team by hitting 41.3 percent (26 of 63) of their attempts, while the Crimson Hawks shot 38.9 percent (28 of 72). Indiana controlled the glass, 57-35, including a 23-5 advantage in offensive rebounds.

The teams came out to the start the second half tied at 36. Indiana opened the half with an 8-1 run take a 44-37 lead. Mumford scored five straight points to pull Holy Family within two (44-42) with 15:54 left. The Crimson Hawks responded by outscoring the Tigers 10-2 over the next 3:30 to move ahead by 10, 54-44.

Swidowski connected on a jumper at the 10:44 mark to cut the Holy Family deficit to five, 59-54. Young got the Indiana lead back to nine (65-56) with a made jumper with 9:05 to play.

Holy Family came back with nine of the game’s 12 points, five by Swidowski, to make it a 68-65 game. Forward Rickie Crews (jr. Westville, N.J./Deptford) hit a free throw to get the Tigers within a bucket (74-72) with 3:43 to go.

The Crimson Hawks scored the next five points over the next three minutes to take the win.

Holy Family returns to the court for its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener on Tuesday, December 8 at Wilmington (Del.). Tip-off is at 8 p.m.
