Second Half Run Pushes Holy Family University Women’s Basketball Past Wilmington, 73-47, in CACC Quarterfinal (3/2/2010)
PHILADELPHIA – The Holy Family University women’s basketball team went on a 15-2 run to open the second half on the way to a 73-47 win over visiting Wilmington (Del.) University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday night at the Campus Center.

Holy Family, ranked second in the NCAA Division II East Region and 14th in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Coaches Poll, improve to 27-1 overall. The Tigers will take on Dominican (N.Y.) College in a CACC semifinal on Friday, March 5 at 5 p.m. at Caldwell College.

Forward Christine McCollum (sr. Abington, Pa./St. Basil’s Academy) led four Tigers in double-figures with a game-high 19 points. Forward Catherine Carr (jr. Bedminster, N.J./Bernards) contributed 14 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Guard Lauren Peters (so. Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks W.) and forward Lindsey Tennett (jr. Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) both netted 13 points. Peters also dished out six assists.

Holy Family never trailed during the contest. The Tigers got out to an 8-3 advantage on a Carr jumper at the 14:06 mark of the first half. After Wilmington (15-13) fought back to tie the score at eight, Holy Family outscored the visitors 14-6 to take a 22-14 lead with 3:51 left in the half. Tennett led the attack with seven of the 14 points.

The Tigers held a 25-19 margin going into the half-time break. Holy Family’s defense was stellar in the first 20 minutes. Wilmington was held to 23.5 percent (4-of-17) shooting and turned the ball over 13 times.

After going on their big run to open the second half, the Tiger lead ballooned out to 40-21with 12:41 to play. McCollum started the run with five of seven points. Peters capped it with a three-point play. The gap hit 20 for the first time when Peters drilled a three-pointer at the 10:50 mark to make the score 46-26.

Tennett ended a 12-4 Holy Family run with a lay-up that increased the advantage to 58-30 with 7:55 to play. The Tigers largest lead came with 1:42 left after Carr hit a lay-up to make it a 71-42 game.

Guard Shantel Brown paced Wilmington with 14 points. Forward Amelia Simmons added 11 points and nine boards.

Holy Family shot 37.1 percent (23-of-62) for the game, while Wilmington finished at 26.1 percent (12-of-46). Both teams had a busy evening at the free throw line. The Tigers took advantage by hitting 81.5 percent (22-of-27) of their attempts. The Wildcats connected at a 60.6 percent (20-of-33) clip. Holy Family controlled the inside by winning the rebounding (51-33) and points-in-the-paint (28-12) battles.
