Johnson Resigns as Head Coach of the Holy Family University Men’s Basketball Team (3/5/2010) PHILADELPHIA – After seven seasons at the end of the bench, Alfred Johnson has resigned as the head coach of the Holy Family University men’s basketball team on Friday. His letter of resignation was accepted by Holy Family director of athletics Sandra Michael. Johnson will stay on board as an assistant director of athletics until June 30. “Alfred is a tremendous person who cared about his team, the department, and Holy Family as a whole,” said Michael. He was a loyal employee and volunteered to assist in any project within the department. A nationwide search for the Tigers’ next coach is underway. Johnson posted 101-103 record in his time with Holy Family. Under his leadership, the Tigers qualified for six Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship Tournaments. He coached one CACC Player of the Year (Michael Sturns in 2008) and one CACC Rookie of the Year (Justin Swidowski in 2009). Six players reached 1,000 career points under his watch. He was tabbed as the CACC and Philadelphia Small College Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2005. Johnson was in the middle of a four-year term as the East Region Chairperson of the NCAA Division II ranking committee. Johnson’s best season came during the 2007-08 campaign. Holy Family posted a 21-10 overall record, reached the final of the CACC Championship Tournament and qualified for the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament for the first time in program history. Sturns became the Tigers first CACC Player of the Year and first All-American since becoming a Division II program. Holy Family went 3-24 overall and 3-14 against the CACC during the 2009-10 season. “Alfred was an advocate for the student-athletes and always had their best interest at heart,” said Michael. “I wish Alfred the very best in his next endeavor.” |
