Holy Family University Falls in CACC Championship Game, 45-43, to Nyack (3/6/2010)
CALDWELL, N.J. – Forward Catherine Carr (jr. Bedminster, N.J./Bernards) scored a game-high 17 points, however, the Holy Family University women’s basketball team suffered a 45-43 defeat to Nyack College in the championship game of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament on Saturday night at Nyack College.

Holy Family, ranked second in the NCAA Division II East Region Rankings and 14th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, falls to 28-2 overall. The loss snaps the Tigers 28-game winning streak. Holy Family will now watch the NCAA Division II Tournament Selection Show on Sunday, March 7 at 9 p.m. to see where it be seeded as an at-large team.

Nyack (21-11) receives the CACC’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Forward Erin Mann (fr. West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) added seven points and three rebounds in a losing effort. Forward Lindsey Tennett (jr. Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and guard Lauren Peters (so. Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks W.) both scored six points.

Guard Jasmine Minter paced the Warriors with 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Forwards Shelly Yount and Vicky Sweet each netted eight points.

The Tigers used the first 10:08 to storm out to a 19-0 advantage. Carr started the run eight consecutive points. Mann and Tennett capped the outburst by each knocked down two free throws. The Tiger defense held the Warriors to 0-of-10 shooting and forced six turnovers.

The gap got as low as nine (19-10) when guard Lekesha Harris hit a three-pointer at the 5:47 mark of the half to cap a 9-0 run. Gibson scored the half two points of the half on a jumper with 2:25 on the clock to give Holy Family a 25-14 lead at the break.

The lead was at 11 when Nyack rallied to cut the gap to three (31-28) with eight straight points, capped with a Minter jumper with 11:44 left. Holy Family immediately answered with five unanswered points to bring the lead back up to eight (36-28) at the 9:50 mark.

The Warriors took the first lead of the contest by hitting four straight triples during a 12-2 run to make the score 40-38 with 6:09 left. Tennett tied the score at 40 at the 4:35 mark fast-break lay-up.

Two-and-a-half minutes later, Yount put Nyack in front 42-40 with a successful 13-foot jumper. On the next possession, Carr gave Holy Family a 43-42 advantage with a three-point play with 2:08 to go.

Minter connected from 15-feet to push Nyack back to lead at 44-43. She made it a 45-43 game with a made free throw with 27 seconds on the clock.

Holy Family had the last possession and a chance to tie, but the shot missed to the right with four seconds left.

Nyack shot 36.2 percent (17-of-47) from the field, while Holy Family hit 22.6 percent (14-of-62) of its shots. The Tigers outrebounded the Warriors, 41-38.
