Holy Family University Women’s Basketball Rallies to Defeat the University of Bridgeport, 49-43, in NCAA Division II East Region Opening Round (3/12/2010)
FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Holy Family University women’s basketball rattled off 12 unanswered points to overcome a six-point deficit in the closing 5:15 to defeat the University of Bridgeport, 49-43, in the opening round of the NCAA Division II East Region Basketball Tournament on Friday afternoon at Fitchburg State College.

Holy Family, the second seed in the region and 16th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll, improves to 29-2 overall. The Tigers will take on third-seeded Stonehill, a 74-56 winner over sixth-seeded Bentley, in the semi-final round on Saturday, March 13 at 5 p.m. This is the second consecutive year, third overall, that the Tigers and Skyhawks will clash in the tournament.

Holy Family was down by a game-high eight points (37-29) at the 12:37 mark of the second half. The Tigers clawed their way back within four (41-37) after a made three-pointer by forward Christine McCollum (sr. Abington, Pa./St. Basil’s Academy), who finished 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Trailing 43-37, the Tigers made their push. Forward Erin Mann (fr. West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) got things started by draining two free throws with 5:03 to play. Forward Catherine Carr (jr. Bedminster, N.J./Bernards) scored the next four points, including two free throws at the 3:00 mark, to tie the score at 43.

McCollum put Holy Family in front for the first time in the half when she connected on a three-pointer with the shot clock winding down to make the score 46-43 with 1:56 to play. Holy Family sealed the win by hitting three free throws in the final 39 seconds.

Defensively, Holy Family clamped down during the run by holding Bridgeport (20-10), the region’s seventh seed, to 0-of-11 shooting.

Holy Family held the lead for most of the first half. The Tigers led by seven points (16-9) after guard Molly Hanlon (fr. Narbeth, Pa./Lower Merion) connected from behind-at-arc at the 8:25 mark. The Purple Knights outscored the Tigers 13-6 to close out the half and lead 25-22 at the break.

Carr was the other Tiger player to reach double-figures with 12 points. Forward Lindsey Tennett (jr. Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) added eight points and six rebounds. Mann grabbed 10 rebounds. Guard Ana-Maria Kammer paced Bridgeport with 14 points.

Both teams had trouble shooting the ball for most of the game. Holy Family shot 26.5 percent (13-of-49) from the field, including 40.0 percent (6-of-15) from three-point range. Bridgeport hit just 25.5 percent (13-of-51) from the field and 20.0 percent (5-of-25) from beyond the arc. Holy Family did a solid job on the glass, outrebounding Bridgeport, 45-32. On the offensive glass, the Tigers held a 14-8 edge.
