Holy Family University Women’s Basketball Goes Back to NCAA Division II East Region Final; Dominates Stonehill, 64-47 (3/13/2010)
FITCHBURG, Mass. – The Holy Family University women’s basketball team will make its second appearance in the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament final in three years after taking down Stonehill College, 64-47, in a semifinal on Saturday evening at Fitchburg State College.

Holy Family, the second seed and 16th in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Coaches Poll, improves to 30-2 overall. It is the Tigers seventh 30-win season and the first under head coach Mark Miller.

The region final will be held on Monday, March 15 at 7 p.m. at Fitchburg State. Holy Family’s only other appearance in the region final came in 2008, an 88-71 loss to Franklin Pierce in Philadelphia. This year’s final will be a rematch of 2008 contest after top-seeded Franklin Pierce knocked off fifth-seeded Molloy, 76-58, in the other semifinal.

Stonehill, the third seed, ends its season at 24-10.

Forward Catherine Carr (jr. Bedminster, N.J./Bernards) led the offense for the Tigers with 17 points. Guard Lauren Peters (so. Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks W.) contributed 14 points and six rebounds. Forward Lindsey Tennett (jr. Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) came off-the-bench and recorded 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Forward Nya Daley (sr. Toronto, Ontario, Canada/The Patterson School) had 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Tigers did a tremendous job on the glass by outrebounding the Skyhawks by 21 (47-26), which is the team’s third largest rebounding margin of the season. On the offensive side, Holy Family grabbed 20 offensive rebounds, which also ranks as the third highest total of the year, compared to 11 for Stonehill.

Holy Family never trailed during the game. Carr helped open the game up by breaking an 8-8 tie with consecutive baskets. The lead hit 14-8 when forward Erin Mann (fr. West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) canned a lay-up at the 10:40 mark.

Leading 20-15, Holy Family broke the half open with a 9-2 spurt, capped by a Peters jumper, to increase the advantage to 29-17 with 2:22 left. The Tiger lead at halftime sat at 31-20.

Holy Family kept the momentum up to open the second half with a 16-6 run to extend the margin to a game-high 21 (47-26). During the run, the Skyhawks were kept to just six free throws after shooting 0-of-12 from the field.

Stonehill attempted to make things interesting by coming back with 14 of the next 18 points to close the gap to 51-40 with 5:18 remaining. The Tigers stopped the rally and got the lead back to 15 (61-45) thanks to a pair of Carr free throws with 1:23 on the clock.

Forward Kelsey Simonds led Stonehill with 12 points.

Holy Family shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55) from the field and 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from three-point range. Stonehill was held to 31.4 percent (16-of-51) overall and 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from behind the arc.
