Softball swept by Dominican on last day of season (4/30/2006)
ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – In a must win doubleheader, Dominican (35-15, 15-7 CACC) took both games from Holy Family (21-29, 11-11 CACC) Sunday afternoon as the Chargers defeated the Tigers 7-6 in eight innings in game one, while the Chargers picked up the win in the nightcap 6-3.

Holy Family needed to win both games to clinch a spot in the CACC playoffs, and saw their season come to an end.

In game one, Holy Family spotted the Chargers an early 3-1 lead after one inning. Holy Family came back to within one at 3-2 in the fourth, when Lauren Armstrong (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) scored on a RBI groundout by Rachael Mudry (Sr./Millville, NJ/Millville).

Holy Family then took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning when Alison McBryar (Jr./Fairless Hills, PA/Pennsbury) scored on a wild pitch, followed by another RBI groundout from Stephanie Mongiello (Jr./Levittown, PA/Conwell Egan) that scored Tara Debes (Sr./Erial, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). Debes finished the first game with two runs scored.

Holy Family allowed Dominican to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, when Danielle Gornie homered to lead off the inning. Home runs would play a key part in the final two innings of the opener. In the top of the eighth inning, Jen Escheman (Jr./Deptford, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and Mudry would open the inning with back-to-back home runs for a 6-4 Holy Family lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Dominican got two runners on with two outs when Michelle Krupna homered to win the game.

Kim Joyce (Sr./Wilmington, DE/St. Elizabeth’s) took the loss, falling to 8-14. She went the distance, striking out four. Escheman and Mudry both had two hits in the contest as did McBryar.

In game two, Holy Family spotted Dominican a 4-0 lead after two innings.

The Tigers scored all three of their runs in the top of the third. Victoria Grayson (Fr./Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) had a RBI single, followed by a two-run single from Mudry.

Dominican added two more in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Amanda Weitman (Fr./Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) took the loss, falling to 2-3 on the season. She went 3.1 innings, allowing six runs while striking out three.

Grayson finished the second game 2-for-4, while Jamie Goffney (Fr./Glen Mills, PA/Penncrest) and Kim Hockenbrock (So./Eagleville, PA/Methacton) both went 2-for-3.

Bridget Robinson (So./Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert’s) pitched 2.2 innings for scoreless softball in relief.
