Holy Family Tames Wildcats (1/12/2005) Holy Family University’s men’s and women’s basketball teams both collected wins last night over the Wilmington College Wildcats. In the women’s game, the Lady Tigers opened the game with a 10-0 run and never looked back. Holy Family used solid shooting, hitting over 46 percent of their shots in the first half, including 4-10 from behind the arc. The Lady Tigers went into halftime holding with a 16 point advantage. The second half saw a much more balanced level of play between the two teams as Wilmington was able to keep pace with Holy Family's tempo. The Lady Tigers kept the hot hand in, again shooting close to 43 percent from the floor and 3-6 from three point range. Holy Family used a 54-38 rebounding advantage as the Lady Tigers controlled the glass the entire game. Holy Family was paced by senior Jamie Battinieri's 23 points as she shot 4-9 from behind the arc. Battinieri also posted 7 rebounds. Freshman Kelly Killion posted another solid game recording 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists in the victory. Sophomore Megan Bauer made a fine return with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Wilmington was led by junior Andrea Jones who had 14 points and 5 steals. Sophomore Katelin Klingert chipped in with 10 points and 5 rebounds, while freshman Nordia Henry recorded 7 points and 12 rebounds. Win the win, Holy Family remains undefeated in the CACC with a record of 6-0 and an overall record of 7-4. Wilmington dropped to 2-5 in the CACC and 6-6 overall. In the men’s game, Holy Family jumped out to a 24-13 lead midway through the first half, paced by Chris Kozole’s 8 points during that span. Wilmington would battle back and take a 33-31 lead on a jumper by junior Gary Williams with 6:17 to go in the half. Holy Family rallied and went into half time with a 6 point lead. The Tigers shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half versus Wilmington’s 35%, which proved to be the difference. The closest Wilmington could get was within 3 points, at 73-70 with just under five minutes to play in the game. However, junior Ryan Haigh hit two clutch three-pointers to put the game out of reach. The Tigers placed five players in double-figures scoring. Holy Family was led by Haigh with 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Chris Kozole posted 18 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists, while Dan Welch chipped in with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Wilmington was led by senior Greg Brown who posted 20 points and 9 rebounds. Juniors Leo Jackson chipped in with 7 points and 10 rebounds, while Bradford Morris had 12 points and 6 rebounds. With the win, Holy Family improved to 3-2 in the CACC and 5-6 overall, while Wilmington fell to 1-5 in the CACC and 1-10 overall. Both Holy Family teams return to action in another CACC doubleheader, as they travel to meet Goldey Beacom College. |
