Softball swept by Wilmington; Tigers eliminated from playoff race (4/29/2007) NEW CASTLE, Del. – Wilmington (Del.) won both ends of a Central Atlantic Colleigate Conference doubleheader on Sunday against Holy Family by a 2-1 score. With the two losses, Holy Family was eliminated from the playoff race as Dominican won one of two games against Georgian Court to grab the sixth and final playoff spot. In game one, Holy Family (16-22, 10-12 CACC) took an early 1-0 lead after one inning on a RBI single from designated player Dolores Brown that scored right fielder Stephanie Mongiellowith two outs. Wilmington (29-13, 16-6 CACC) scored one run in the bottom of the second on a home run to start the inning. In the seventh, the Wildcats scored the game winning run with one out on a RBI double. Starting catcher Jennifer Eschemanwent 3-for-4 in the game, while second baseman Sarah Marstellerwent 2-for-4. Starting pitcher Jody Searfoss took the loss, falling to 11-10. She struck out five in 6.1 innings of work. In game two, Holy Family again took a 1-0 lead, this time as starting centerfielder Lauren Armstrong scored on passed ball after leading off the second inning with a triple. That would turn out to be the only run the Tigers would score, as the Wildcats scored one run in the second and the third. Holy Family did get nine hits in the game, as Mongiello and starting first baseman Jamie Goffney each had two hits. |
