Holy Family University Women’s Soccer Wins CACC Championship; Blanks Philadelphia University, 1-0 (11/3/2007)
Rutherford, NJ -- The Holy Family University women’s soccer team claimed the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship by defeating Philadelphia University, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Tryon Field in Rutherford, NJ.

The championship is the third for the Tigers and first since 2005. The win also puts Holy Family in the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament via the conference’s automatic berth status. Holy Family is in the tournament for the first time and is the first team from the CACC to make the tournament.

“Our biggest goal was to back to this point,” said Tigers head coach Mike Biddle. “We looked to our seniors to help get us here and they came up big for us in the tournament. “We wanted to be the first team to represent the conference in the tournament.”

Midfielder Kaitlin Gavaghan (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) scored the game’s lone goal in the 36th minute. The championship-clinching tally was unassisted.

Tigers’ keeper Kelly McGrogan (sr. Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert’s) came up big for the third straight game by making seven saves. McGrogan recorded three shut-outs in the CACC Tournament and was named as the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Four other Tigers were selected to the All-Tournament Team: back Leah Froncek (sr. Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert’s), midfielder Meghan McCusker (so. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), midfielder Jennifer James (fr. Philadelphia, PA/Little Flower) and Gavaghan.

Holy Family (14-7) will find out where and who they will play in the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament when the field is selected on Monday, November 5.

“We know the competition will be strong,” stated Biddle. “We are going to make sure that we are ready for the next step. The goal wasn’t just to make the tournament, but to advance in it as well.”
