Holy Family Loses Tough One
To Nyack
-By Jeffrey Kruczynski
Some say it's better to be lucky than good
and unfortunately luck was not on Holy Family's side. The
Men's soccer team fell victim to some unlucky bounces that
played a major role in their 3-1 loss to Nyack.
The first period consisted of an intense defensive battle
between the two teams. Neither team was the recipient of any
quality scoring chances until Tim Hamill scored with 19:10
left to give Holy Family a 1-0 lead. Tim was on a breakaway
and made a jaw-dropping move to deke the goaltender out of
his shoes and kicked the ball into the empty net. The score
remained the same as the period came to a close.
In the second frame, Holy Family couldn't catch a break. First,
Nyack tied the score (1-1) with 30:03 remaining in regulation.
Then things started to get weird. Not once but twice, Holy
Family had a glorious opportunity to take the lead. In both
cases, the goaltender was beaten but a defender for Nyack
kicked the ball away just before it crossed the goal line,
to preserve the tie. The Tigers were shocked and in disbelief
over what had happened. Because of those outstanding defensive
plays, Nyack captured the momentum and proceeded to score
two goals in a six-minute span (3-1). Nyack would later commit
robbery once again to frustrate the Tigers even more. Despite
these occurrences, Holy Family continued to battle and hustle
but to no avail.
"We played hard, but luck was not on our side", said John
Amorim, Holy Family's head coach. "When you're in position
to score, you must be doing something right. We had some tough
breaks and they (Nyack) took advantage." With the loss the
Tigers' record dropped to 6-6-0 on the season.
