Women's Volleyball Game Last
Night!
-By Brian Morlock
The Holy Family women’s volleyball team was going for their first win in a game Thursday, September 25 against University of Sciences. Coming into the game, Holy Family has only won one set all season. The team already lost to the University of Sciences once this season, but the Lady Tigers have made some strides since the last time the two teams met. Coming into the match, the University of Sciences had a record of 4-6.
The game did not start off in the Lady Tigers favor. They fell behind 13-3 in the early going. Coach Joanna Pennell called a timeout to try and rally her girls. Whatever she said seemed to work. The Lady Tigers came all the way back and tied the game in the first set. They were not able to get over the hump and ended up losing the first set 30-26. The team rebounded really well after a slow start and played hard, but there were too many mental mistakes made during the first set.
In the second set, the Lady Tigers started off strong and held an early lead. University of Sciences fought their way back and eventually took the lead. This set came down to the very end just like the first set. The Lady Tigers competed hard and although they have not won a game this season, there was no quit in these girls. Teresa Devine, a senior for the Lady Tigers had a terrific game. Junior Meghan Kerns said, "She played great. She even had a nice spike in the game too." The Lady Tigers were able to win the second set 30-27. Coach Joanna Pennell jumped up in joy after her Lady Tigers scored to win the second set.
After winning the second set, things started to go down hill. University of Sciences dominated the third set almost all the way through. After trailing 8-4 early on, Coach Pennell called timeout and showed her frustrations to her team. "We are giving them this game," Pennell said. After the timeout, the University of Sciences continued their domination. Holy Family lost the set 30-20. They found themselves trailing 2-1 which meant they needed to win the next two sets to win the match. The Lady Tigers fought hard in the fourth set, but came up a little short. They ended up losing the match 3 sets to one.
Although the Lady Tigers were not able to win their first match, they are playing better and better each game. For a first year team, they seem to be competing really well against the other teams in the league. If the Lady Tigers continue to play hard, winning will eventually come.
