Unseen Misfortune
-By Jeffrey Kruczynski, 11/19/2003
The Lady Tigers began the season, their
first in Division II of the NCAA, with a shocking 70-66 loss
to Merrimack College. Nina Smith led the way for Holy Family
with a double-double (20 points, 10 rebounds), 3 assists and
one block. Both teams had trouble handling the ball as they
combined for 45 turnovers (Holy Family - 23, Merrimack - 22).
The biggest difference in the game was Merrimack's ability
to shoot from beyond the arc. Merrimack made 52.6 percent
(10/19) of their three-pointers compared to Holy Family's
41.7 percent (5/12). Katie Baun had 7 steals and 5 assists
to go along with 10 points. Keisha Brown and Jamie Battinieri
scored 10 points in a losing effort. Freshman center, Megan
Bauer, played pretty well in her debut as she scored 5 points
and had 4 blocks off the bench. The loss was a tough pill
to swallow, but remember one game does not make a season.
