Archives March Exhibit Features “Religious and Spiritual Art” (April, 2010)Rebecca Ross brings her “Religious and Spiritual Art” exhibit to the Art Gallery for the month of March. DiFalco’s show begins on Tuesday, March 9, and runs through the end of the month. Ross is well known for her modernistic interpretations of Renaissance masters and Rembrandt drawings. She is scheduled to speak at the exhibit’s opening reception on Tuesday, March 16. The reception will run from 6-8 pm. Newtown Hosts Women’s History Event (April, 2010) Holy Family University-Newtown will hold the 18th Annual Women’s History Month Celebration on Thursday, March 11, from 4:30-8:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. The event, entitled “A Salute to Women Who Write,” is free and open to the public. The featured speaker will be Scott Heydt, author of Mice don’t Taste like Chicken and other children’s books. Heydt’s presentation will include a discussion of women authors who influenced him. University Celebrates Pi Day; Hosts High School Math Contest (April, 2010) The Math Club and the Math Honor Societies, under the direction of Sister Marcella Louise Wallowicz, CSFN, are co-sponsoring a pair of events in March. On Thursday, March 11, the fourth annual Pi Day celebration will take place beginning at 12:30 pm in the Dining Commons. If you are interested in participating in either the Pi Recitation Contest or the Pie Eating Contest, contact Sister Marcella (smwallowicz@holyfamily.edu; x3563). The following day, the Club hosts a High School Math Competition at 3:30 pm in Holy Family Hall. Creativity Conference (April, 2010) Holy Family will host "Perspectives on Creativity 2010" on March 20. The Conference seeks to gather professionals from different areas of study and practice in order to share what we know about creativity. Individuals were invited to submit papers addressing one of six themes: the nature of creativity and the creative process; the characteristics of creative individuals; the relationship between creativity and mental health; the healing power of creativity; the relationship between creativity and brain functioning; the developmental trajectory of creativity; and society’s shaping influences on creativity. Professor of Art Exhibits Works in Two Shows (April, 2010) Professor of Art Pamela Flynn, MFA, is participating in a group exhibit entitled “Quintet” at the Phoenix Gallery in New York City from March 3-27. Flynn’s work is also on display at the Philadelphia Chapter of the Women’s Caucus for Art’s “WOMEN: A Member’s Show” exhibit from March 8-14 at the International House, located at 3701 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. Commencement Web Site Activated (April, 2010) Commencement information is now available at www.holyfamily.edu/commencement. Holy Family’s Commencement will be held on Tuesday, May 18 at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia. The graduate degree ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. and the undergraduate degree ceremony begins at 12:30 p.m. Over 340 graduate degree candidates and over 440 undergraduate degree candidates are eligible to participant in the ceremonies. Additionally, three honorary degree recipients will be honored by Holy Family for their outstanding contributions and achievements. Business Professor Invited to Present (April, 2010) Professor of Business Administration Anthony DiPrimio, PhD, had an article entitled, "Have American Corporate Executives Lost All Sense of Ethical Responsibility" accepted for publication in the Journal of Case Research in Business and Economics. In addition, DiPrimio has been invited to present his paper at the Academic and Business Research Institute Conference this March. His research focuses on identifying the causative factors that lead corporate executives to resort to decisions that result in ruin for themselves and their corporations. Nursing Programs Host Accreditation Evaluation (April, 2010) The Nursing Program will host an evaluation team visit by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) from March 24-26. The visit is part of the re-accreditation process for the BSN and MSN programs. Safety Director’s Nephew Sworn in as Judge (April, 2010) Director of Public Safety Joseph McBride’s nephew Edward J. McBride, Jr. was sworn in on March 1 as a Judge for the Superior Court of New Jersey. Edward McBride was appointed to the bench by Governor Jon Corzine. He had previously served as Chief of Staff for Governor Corzine. Employees Honored During Charter Day Festivities (April, 2010) Holy Family University celebrated the 56th anniversary of its founding at Charter Day on Monday, February 15. The University honored staff members who have served for five, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years at the conclusion of Mass. A cake cutting followed the ceremony. Vice President for Institutional Advancement Margaret Kelly, MA, was honored for her 30 years of service to the University. Alumnus Recounts Mission Trip to Haiti (April, 2010) Dr. Keith Lafferty ’89, MD, presented a slide show to Holy Family students, faculty, and staff on Thursday, February 18. Lafferty recently returned from a week-long journey to earthquake-ravaged Haiti as part of the Mission of Hope–Haiti relief mission. Calling the experience “practicing medicine the way I dreamed it would be practiced,” Lafferty recounted his experiences while showing moving photos of his trip. Lafferty and his colleagues on the relief mission ran a hospital in downtown Port-au-Prince, helping as many of the injured as possible during the week. A Sample of Recent Items in the News (April, 2010) February 18: Director of Financial Aid Janice Hetrick, BA, was quoted as an expert in the Northeast Times regarding the student financial aid application process. The story was headlined “Financial Aid 101 from a Local Professional.” February 21: KYW 1060 interviewed Associate Professor of Education Roger Gee, PhD, and a visiting research student from Universidad Arturo Prat in Iquique, Chile regarding the University partnership. February 28: Channel 6 (WPVI) interviewed Associate Professor of Education Roger Gee, PhD, regarding the earthquake in Chile and student visitors from that country. March 2: KXLY-TV (ABC affiliate, Spokane, WA) interviewed Holy Family students on the Alternate Spring Break trip with Habitat for Humanity. Students were interviewed live for the local morning news show. ,br> March 8: Dean for the School of Business Administration Jan Duggar, PhD, was quoted in a front page Philadelphia Inquirer article about the start of a new three-year-degree program at the University. The story was headlined "A Degree in 3 Years at 2 Area Colleges.” University Welcomes New Employees (April, 2010) Rosemary Lynch was hired as a part-time Academic Support Specialist in our Division of Extended Learning in February. Lynch most recently worked as ward secretary/treasurer for the 58th Ward Republican Committee in Philadelphia. Previously, she was the legislative assistant to state representative George T. Kenney, and she has also served as an accounting supervisor for The CEI Network, Inc. in Trevose. John Nickels, Jr. and David Savidge were hired as Public Safety Officers. Nickels was most recently employed by Leonard Security at Willow Grove Air Force Base, and he serves as a volunteer firefighter and chief engineer with the Croydon Fire Company. He is also a graduate of the Philadelphia Culinary Art Institute. Savidge worked previously as a detective in the South Division of the Philadelphia Police Department and was also a Police Officer in the 26th and 17th Districts and in the Police Academy. He was named Police Officer of the Year in 1987 by the Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police for the arrest of Gary Heidnik. Savidge also served as a United States Merchant Marine Officer and was a licensed captain. Jack Mattes joined the staff in Audio/Visual Services in March as an A/V Technician/User Support Specialist. Mattes most recently worked as a technician with RGB Business Tech. He has also worked as a network engineer with Breaker Technologies, as a PC technician with Woorlco/Rohm and Haas, and as a network administrator at Burlington County College. University Holds Blood Drive (April, 2010) Employees and faculty are encouraged to donate blood on Friday, March 19, when the American Red Cross will be in the Campus Center Lower Lobby for the day. Daffodil Days (April, 2010) Holy Family’s annual Daffodil Days campaign, supporting the American Cancer Society, will take place from Wednesday, March 17 through Friday, March 19. Daffodils will be sold in the cafeteria and the Perzel Education and Technology Center Lobby of the Northeast Philadelphia Campus during lunch hours. The cost is $6 for five flowers. Flowers will also be available at the front desk at Woodhaven and Newtown during regular business hours. Purchases support cancer research, education, and transportation services for cancer patients and their families. Maps and Memories on Display in Art Gallery (February, 2010) Patricia Ingersoll’s “Maps and Memories” exhibit is on display in the Holy Family University Art Gallery from December 3 through January 10, 2010. Ingersoll’s exhibit features grids and overlapping lines, augmented by brush strokes and bold color. This particular exhibit continues her studies of the merging of organic and geometric elements in nature and how they compare and contrast with the human condition. Ingersoll was a mural painter for 12 years with the internationally famous Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. More of Ingersoll’s work can be found at www.tishingersoll.com. Serving a Breakfast of Champions (February, 2010) The Breakfast of Champions will take place on Thursday, December 10 at 10 pm in the Campus Center Commons. Faculty and staff will serve a late-night snack to the students as they prepare for final examinations. Breakfast with Santa (February, 2010) Students at Your Service present their annual Breakfast with Santa on Sunday, December 13, from 9-11 am in the Campus Center Commons. Admission is $10 per person, with children ages two and under admitted free. The event includes a breakfast buffet, arts and crafts, and free photos with Santa. Spring 2010 Faculty/Administration Business Meeting (February, 2010) The Faculty/Administration Opening Meeting for the Spring 2010 semester will take place on Tuesday, January 19 at 12:30 pm in the Perzel Education & Technology Center Auditorium. Strategic Planning Community Day (February, 2010) A Strategic Planning Community Planning Day is scheduled for Friday, January 29, 2010 from 9-11:30 am at Woodhaven. Representatives from Performa will be joining the Strategic Planning Advisory Committee to assist us in conducting this very important planning activity. President Attends Exclusive Middle East Conference (February, 2010) President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, attended the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) in mid-November. The summit took place in Doha, Qatar, and was be attended by 1,000 leading education stakeholders and opinion leaders from around the world. Sister Francesca was chosen because of her executive-level involvement with the International Association of University Presidents United Nations Commission on Disarmament Education, Conflict Resolution and Peace. Dean Attends Global Conference in Rome (February, 2010) Dean for the School of Arts and Sciences Regina Hobaugh, PhD, attended the 23rd General Assembly of the International Federation of Catholic Universities in Rome. The conference, held in mid-November, brought together high ranking university officials from around the world to discuss issues related to “The Catholic University in Post-Modern Societies.” Nursing Programs Host Accreditation Evaluation (February, 2010) The Nursing Program will host an evaluation team visit by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) from March 24-26. The visit is part of the re-accreditation process for the BSN and MSN programs. Interested faculty and staff are invited to submit written, signed comments concerning the program’s qualifications for accreditation status. CCNE shares third-party comments with members of the evaluation team prior to the visit, but at no time during the review process are these comments shared with the program. Written comments will be received by CCNE until February 24, which is 30 days before the scheduled visit. MIS Chair to Present at FBI Lab (February, 2010) Management Information Systems Chair Tom Martin, PhD, will present “The Impending Threat of IPv6; Are You Ready?” at the December meeting of the High Technology Crime Investigation Association held at the FBI Regional Computer Forensics Lab in Radnor. Business Professor Publishes Book (February, 2010) Professor of Business Administration Anthony DiPrimio, PhD, had his new book Corporate Leadership and Governance: A CEO’s Survival Manual published by Cengage Learning. The book features a foreword by President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, and interviews with the presidents of LaSalle University and Saint Joseph's University. Dr. DiPrimio's earlier book, Managing Corporate Communication, also published by Cengage Learning, has been used as the primary textbook in the Organizational Communication course in the graduate program in Human Resources Management for the past two years. Associate Professor of Education Presents at Conference (February, 2010) Associate Professor of Education Michael White, PhD, presented at the Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) international conference in Orlando on October 30. His presentation focused on the effective use of role play in teaching science concepts to elementary students. White involved the audience of more than 60 professional educators in role play activities including: Energy transformation (law of conservation of mass); Osmosis, role of enzymes in chemical reactions; Transport of cholesterol in the human body; and immune responses to viral infections. Assistant VP for Human Resources Attends Leadership Forum (February, 2010) Assistant Vice President for Human Resources Renee Rosenfeld, MBA, CEBS, SPHR, was one of 350 participants at the Philadelphia Human Resource Planning Society's 2009 Leadership Forum, held at the Union League on November 6. The event's guest speaker, David Ulrich, is a Professor of Business at the University of Michigan and a partner at the RBL Group, a consulting firm that helps organizations and leaders deliver value. In three of the past four years, Ulrich was ranked the #1 most influential person in human resources by HR Magazine. His message on how to transform HR practices to better align and integrate with business goals was particularly timely during these challenging economic times. Adjunct Professor Leads Discussion; Participates in Dialogue (February, 2010) Adjunct Instructor of Religious Studies Dennis Feltwell, BA, led a roundtable discussion at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Religion in Montreal, entitled "Best Teaching Tips: 30 Ideas in 30 Minutes." Feltwell also participated in the Third Inter-Religious Dialogue, held at Delaware County Community College in November. The theme of the dialogue was "Fundamentalism, Extremism, and Holy War." Biology Professor Accompanies Student to Conference (February, 2010) Senior biology student Alhagie Tabb presented his research poster at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) held in Phoenix in November. Working under the direction of his research mentor Associate Professor of Biology Robert Cordero, PhD, Tabb presented “Growth Inhibition and Antioxidant Properties of Aqueous and Methanolic Extracts of the Leaves from a Variety of Hosta Plants.” Cordero also worked with Tabb to secure a travel grant of $1300 for the conference. Christmas Rose Tradition Continues (February, 2010) Holy Family’s annual holiday tradition – Christmas Rose – took place on Tuesday, December 8, in the Campus Center Gymnasium. The University community celebrated the evening together with a Eucharistic Liturgy, a buffet dinner and entertainment provided by students. Athletics Donates Record Number of Books (February, 2010) The Holy Family Athletic Department donated a record 2,518 books to the Laura H. Carnell Elementary School during its fourth-annual Build-a-Library presentation on Tuesday, November 24. This year’s total easily surpasses the previous record of 1,500 books that were given to the Philip H. Sheridan Elementary School and the Kids’ World Christian Education Center last year. Since the Build-a-Library community engagement initiative started in 2006, Holy Family has donated almost 6,300 new books to five Philadelphia area schools. Student-athletes and athletics staff delivered more than 30 crates to an assembly of fourth, fifth and sixth graders. The student-athletes also spoke to the group about a variety of topics including the importance of reading, setting goals, and finding your passion in life. Manger Scene Installed on Campus (February, 2010) A manger scene commemorating the birth of Christ has been erected on the Northeast Philadelphia Campus to remind the community about the true meaning of Christmas. The scene sits near the University’s Frankford Avenue border directly outside Holy Family Hall, allowing maximum visibility for all who pass by the University. The scene was built by Maintenance Supervisor Mike Shane and his staff; the background scenery was painted by Sister Jolanta Kruczek, CSFN; and the figures of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph were selected by Purchasing Supervisor Marie Melnick and Sister Janice Kobierowski, CSFN, MA. Second Annual Employers Reception Draws a Crowd (February, 2010) In October, the Cooperative Education Department’s second annual New Employers Reception drew nearly 45 cooperating employers, co-op advisory board members, members of Senior Administration, Deans, co-op/internship faculty and officers of Kappa Theta Epsilon (KTE). The officers of KTE, a national co-op and internship honor society, had the opportunity to network with some of the employers, as did board members, faculty, and co-op staff. Some of the newly acquired cooperating employers present were: Elizabeth Hess, Greater Northeast Chamber of Commerce; Dr. Tomaz Skorska and Dr. Margaret Skorska, Professors and Research Scientists from Temple University; Mary Tremper, Vice Principal, St. Christopher's School; Paula McCourt, Research Scientist, Medical Diagnostic Laboratories, Hamilton, NJ; Robert O'Brien, Atlantic Security International Investigations, Inc.; and Al Taubenberger, Greater Northeast Chamber of Commerce. Climate Scientist Discusses Global Warming (February, 2010) Oceanographer Anand Gnanadesikan, PhD, presented “The Science of Global Warming: Fact, Fiction, Hypothesis” to a standing room only crowd of Holy Family students, faculty, and staff on November 5. Dr. Gnanadesikan works in the Oceans and Climate Group at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory. The seminar was sponsored by the Biology Speaker Series, the Committee on the Environment, and the Albertans and Environment Clubs. Gnanadesikan leaned more towards global warming as a fact, but told attendees that in order for it to be accepted scientifically, it must be predictable. November 19: Women’s soccer head coach Mike Biddle was quoted in a Northeast Times article headlined “Eye of the Tigers” about the team’s CACC Championship. November 19: Sister Rita Kathryn Sperka, CSFN, was interviewed for a Northeast Times article entitled “They Shall not be Forgotten,” about 11 CSFN religious who were killed in 1943 during the Holocaust. December 1: Sister Francesca Onley, PhD, CSFN, was interviewed about her recent trip to the Middle East in a Bucks County Courier Times article headlined “University President Attends Summit in Qatar.” Health Coaching Offered (February, 2010) Full-time employees and faculty who have health coverage through Independence Blue Cross now have access to a health coach. Public Safety, Business Office Welcome New Employees (February, 2010) Mary Teresa Ferraro joins Holy Family as Manager of Student Finance/Bursar. Ferraro comes to Holy Family from Beneficial Bank, where she began as a teller and most recently served as Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager. She holds a BS in Business Administration from St. Joseph’s University and is a member of the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. John Orth joined Public Safety on November 16 as a part-time Officer. Orth was with the Philadelphia Police Department for many years, where he served as a patrol officer, crime scene technician, training officer and undercover and surveillance officer. Prior to that, he was employed by SEPTA as a patrol officer and detective. Orth attended CHI Institute School of Respiratory Therapy, St. Petersburg Jr. College - Southeastern Public Safety Institute, and Community College of Philadelphia. He holds a certificate of achievement from the Federal Emergency Management Institute. Senior Thesis Featured in Art Gallery (December, 2009) Senior Andre Teixeira’s exhibit “Faith via Design” is on display in the Holy Family University Art Gallery from November 4-24. There will be an opening reception and an artist’s talk on Thursday, November 5, from 6-8 pm. Inspired by the art and culture of his Portuguese heritage, Teixeira’s thesis work represents familiar icons that have been revolutionized through elements of design and formalism. He simplifies each sculpture to a mere ethnic interpretation while staying fairly true to some folk and traditional elements. The University Art Gallery is located on the Lower Level of the Perzel Education & Technology Center on the University’s Northeast Philadelphia Campus. Alumni Dedicate Gift; Seniors Kick Off Campaign (December, 2009) The Class of 2009 will dedicate its senior class gift (two picnic tables and two plaques in honor of Father Thomas Fahy) on Wednesday, November 11 at 4:30 pm at the Gazebo between St. Joseph’s Hall and the Nurse Education Building. The 2010 Senior Class will use this occasion to kick off their legacy campaign. A reception will follow in the lobby of the Perzel Education & Technology Center (ETC). Basketball Teams Host Tip-Off Event (December, 2009) The Department of Athletics will hold a “Road to the Elite Eight” event on Wednesday, November 11, from 7-9 pm in the Campus Center. The free event is slated to kickoff the men’s and women’s basketball seasons. The festivities will begin with the first 100 guests receiving a free slice of pizza as they enter the gymnasium. Pom-poms will be given out to all fans in attendance. Holocaust Conference (December, 2009) The Graduate Programs of the School of Arts and Sciences at Holy Family University will present a two-day interdisciplinary conference entitled "70 Years Later: The Global Impact of the Holocaust" to be held on November 14-15, 2009. Library Adds Collections on Japanese History, Holocaust (December, 2009) There are two new collections on display in the Library-a new collection of books on Japanese history, culture, and politics, which was a gift of the Nippon Foundation, and a collection of books on the Holocaust, in support of the November 14-15 conference "The Global Impact of the Holocaust: 70 Years Later." All books are available for immediate checkout. Finance Professor Publishes Paper (December, 2009) Assistant Professor of Finance Cao Jiang, PhD, had a paper entitled "Does the multinationality matter? Implications of operational hedging for the exchange risk exposure," published with co-author J.J. Choi in the Journal of Banking and Finance. The paper ran in a November World Bank/IMF special issue on the global financial crisis, risk measurement and management. Nursing Faculty Present Poster (December, 2009) Nursing Simulation Coordinator Kathy Kelly-West, MBA, MSN, RN, and Associate Professor of Nursing Mary Wombwell, EdD, CNE, RN, presented a poster entitled "Integrating Technology as a Thread in the Curriculum" at the 4th Annual National League for Nursing (NLN) Technology Conference held at The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in Baltimore, Maryland, in early November. Nursing Instructor Presents at Conference (December, 2009) Nursing Instructor Sister Clare Marie Butt, CSFN, presented "Supporting Hope in Midlife Cancer Survivors" to Sigma Theta Tau International, Epsilon Beta Chapter in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, on October 21. The Epsilon Beta chapter of the Honor Society of Nursing is connected with Fitchburg State College. Adjunct Professor Presents Paper, Wins Award (December, 2009) Adjunct Instructor of Religious Studies Dennis Feltwell, BA, presented a paper entitled "The Christian Voice As 'Other:' Its Loss, Recovery, and Future Challenges," at the Third Annual Baylor Symposium on Faith & Culture at Baylor University in Waco, Texas in October. The title of this year's symposium was “Secularization and Revival: The Fate of Religion in Modern Intellectual History.” In addition, Feltwell’s essay "Go Home and Proclaim: Rediscovering Mark 5:1-20 in Light of a Theology of Ministry," received the Richard and Louise Goodwin Prize for Excellence in Theological Writing, sponsored by Theological Horizons. Business Dean Presents Paper, Publishes Article (December, 2009) Dean of the School of Business Administration Jan Duggar, PhD, presented a paper entitled “The Role of Integrity in Individual and Effective Corporate Leadership” at the Academic and Business Research Institute in Orlando, Florida, in September. Duggar also co-published “International Supply and Demand for US Trained Commercial Airline Pilots” in the October issue of Journal of Aviation Management and Education, Vol. 1. Relay For Life Team Forming (December, 2009) Newtown Financial Data Specialist/Receptionist Norah Spencer is a co-chair for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Bensalem. Sister Patrice Honored at Alumni Dinner (December, 2009) Sister Patrice Feher, CSFN, MA ’66, Sister Miriam Joseph Mikol, CSFN ’66, Dr. Susan Apold ’79, and Maryann Molishus ’00, were honored at the Alumni Association Awards and Reunion Dinner on October 23. S. Patrice was honored with a special tribute for her 40 years of service to students. A special student activities scholarship fund was established in her honor. S. Miriam received the Alumni Achievement Award, Dr. Apold was presented the Distinguished Nursing Alumni Award, and Molishus received the Alumni Educator of the Year Award. University Awards Honorary Degree (December, 2009) Holy Family welcomed Guizhou University President Chen Shuping, PhD, as the featured guest during the University’s International Friendship Day on Wednesday, November 4. Holy Family honored Dr. Chen with a special academic ceremony and luncheon. President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, presented Dr. Chen with an honorary degree. Holy Family has enjoyed a friendship with Guizhou for several years. In 2007, the two Universities signed a Memorandum of Understanding agreeing to exchange visits of faculty and students, and to explore academic program sharing. Guizhou is the state college of Guizhou Province, located in the southwest region of China. It has 20 colleges that serve almost 42,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Speaker Series Explores Aramingo Canal (December, 2009) Holy Family, in conjunction with Glen Foerd on the Delaware, co-sponsored a PowerPoint presentation entitled, “Rediscovering a Forgotten Public Highway: The Rise, Fall, and Archaeological Rebirth of the Aramingo Canal,” on Friday, November 6. Douglas Mooney, a Senior Archaeologist with the URS Corporation, who directed the recent investigations of the Aramingo Canal, was the featured speaker. University Honors Philanthropist (December, 2009) Holy Family, the Philadelphia Fire Department, and the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 22, presented philanthropist Kal Rudman with the Public Safety Champion Award on October 29 at Philadelphia Fire Department headquarters. Rudman has provided more than $41,000 in scholarships to Holy Family students through the Kal and Lucille Rudman Scholarship in Fire Science and Public Safety Administration. The scholarships enable Philadelphia firefighters and emergency personnel to obtain a bachelor of science degree in Fire Science and Public Safety Administration at Holy Family. Polish Contingent Visits Holy Family (December, 2009) High school students and officials from the town of Torun, Poland, spent Tuesday, October 20, touring Holy Family and learning about campus life. The group included 23 high school juniors and seniors, four teachers, and the principal from the Kosciuszko School #4, as well as the superintendent, town mayor and a city councilor from Torun, located roughly three hours north of Warsaw. The group will met campus leaders in the President’s Dining Room and individuals from Student Services, Athletics, and the Career Center gave presentations to the contingent. Begnaud worked previously as a Police Detective in Philadelphia, a School Bus Driver in Lower Moreland and an Auto Mechanic for Jenkintown Paratransit Company and Paramedical Ambulance Service. He is a graduate of Lincoln Technical Institute, where he studied auto mechanics. Walt's four children are Holy Family graduates. Anthony Sherman joined Public Safety on October 30, also as a part-time Officer. Sherman is a Police Officer in the 35th District, currently assigned to burglary and robbery detail. Help Athletics Build a Library (December, 2009) The Athletic Department seeks donations for their 2009 Build-A-Library campaign for the Laura H. Carnell School. Associate Professor of History Tours Turkey (November, 2009) Associate Professor of History Cathlyn Mariscotti, PhD, toured Turkey with the Dialogue Forum of Philadelphia in July. The interfaith trip included eight people from various religious backgrounds and featured visits to historical areas that are important to Christian, Jewish, and Muslim faiths. The group went to Mardin and Urfa (purported home of Abraham) in southeastern Anatolia; traveled to Izmir and saw Ephesus; went to Cappadocia, where early Christians hid and Christian ascetics lived and formed churches in the caves; and visited Rumi's tomb and witnessed the Mevlevis (whirling dervishes) in Konya. The final destination was Istanbul where Mariscotti visited Hagia Sopia, and the Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace. Professor of Education Co-Presents Workshop (November, 2009) Professor of Education Lynn Orlando, PhD, and six of her graduate students presented a workshop entitled “Language and Literacy Development for Early Learning” at the 21st Annual Fall Early Childhood Conference held at Bucks County Community College on October 3. Scholarship Stewardship Dinner Honors Students and Benefactors (November, 2009) Holy Family’s scholars and stewards gathered together on Wednesday at the University’s Third Annual Scholarship Stewardship Dinner, held at Torresdale-Frankford Country Club. The event celebrates Holy Family’s numerous scholarship recipients and the benefactors who made those scholarships available. Many of the students met their benefactors for the first time at the event. Three new scholarships were awarded in 2009-10, including the Catholic Kolping Society Scholarship, the Ulysses J. Connor, Jr. Memorial Award, and the Christian and Bobby Himes-Viskovich Memorial Scholarship. Approximately 130 students received more than $130,000 in scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year. Rabbi Explains Spirituality of Yom Kippur (November, 2009) Rabbi Jerry Lauterbach spoke to a crowd of Holy Family students, faculty, and staff on September 24, explaining the spirituality of Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement. Rabbi Lauterbach showcased his own prayer shawl (talith), as well as the white gown worn by worshippers on Yom Kippur to symbolize purity. He blew into the shofar – a well known symbol of Rosh Hashanah made from a ram’s horn. The Rabbi passed on the five steps of repentance stressed on Yom Kippur: recognition of sin, the process of self discovery, inner regret, confession, and acceptance of a sense of optimism. The presentation concluded with a moving rendition of the Kol Nidre, an Aramaic declaration recited before the beginning of the evening service on Yom Kippur. Business Professor Publishes Article (October, 2009) Professor of Business Administration Anthony DiPrimio, PhD, had an article entitled Mistakes a CEO Must Avoid published in the Academic and Business Research Institute Journal. DiPrimio will present the paper at the association conference this fall. He is currently working on his third book, Corporate Leadership and Governance. Associate Professor of Education Writes Book (October, 2009) Associate Professor of Education Helen Hoffner, EdD, wrote Making Connections: Activities and Lesson Plans that Connect Literacy Skills to Standards, which will be published by Corwin Press in 2010. The book helps novice and veteran teachers meet instructional standards with a broad spectrum of activities addressing all areas of the language arts: reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing. Writing Professor Interviewed on BBC (October, 2009) Assistant Professor of Writing Amalia Gnanadesikan, PhD, gave an interview for the program "Questions, Questions" on BBC Radio 4 about the direction that scripts are written in. It aired in England on August 20. Susan Rogers Earns Magna cum Laude Honors (October, 2009) Susan Rogers, MA, from the Radiologic Science Department, completed her master’s degree in forensic psychology this past July. Rogers began the program in August 2007 and completed it with Magna cum Laude honors. Her graduate project “An analysis of cognitive development: Can adolescents ever be considered legally competent to stand trial based on research findings regarding adolescent cognitive development?” is currently under review by the Journal of Forensic Psychiatry & Psychology for publication. Library Receives Collection on Japan (October, 2009) The Holy Family University Library is one of the U.S. libraries selected to receive a collection of books about Japan through The Nippon Foundation’s program, “100 Books for Understanding Contemporary Japan.” The collection will feature books about Japanese politics, economics, business, society, culture, literature, and history. The Library will be receiving the books soon and will create a special display to mark the acquisition. Math Professor Submits Review (October, 2009) For many years, Sister Marcella Louise Wallowicz, CSFN, MA, has served as a referee in the area of History of Math for the KME math journal Pentagon. This past June, S. Marcella submitted a review/critique of the article “The Lady Philosopher: Hypatia of Alexandria” for inclusion in the journal. In August, S. Marcella was invited by Pearson Prentice Hall publishers to participate in a pre-revision review of “Statistics: The Art and Science of Learning from Data 2e”, by Agresti/Franklin in preparation for a new edition. S. Marcella has submitted a substantive review of the first seven chapters of the text. Stevenson Lane Dedication (October, 2009) The Stevenson Lane Residence was dedicated on Tuesday in front of a crowd of 200 faculty, staff, students, dignitaries and friends of Holy Family. Students are living in the Residence for the first time this semester. Students led tours through the building after the ceremony. The five-story brick and glass building offers the style and amenities students have come to expect in contemporary campus housing. The building wing was dedicated to Sister Patrice Feher, CSFN, MA, who has served the University’s student life program for more than 40 years. S. Patrice is currently Assistant Vice President of Student Services. Outside the main building entrance sit three life-sized bronze statues depicting Jesus Christ with two college students. The sculpture was designed by Sister Margaret Beaudette, SC, of Bronx, New York, especially for the new student residence. Residence Life Staff Has “Supper with the Sisters” (October, 2009) Members of the Residence Life staff, as well as resident advisors, joined the Sisters at Delaney Hall for supper on Thursday, August 13. Four Faculty Receive Ray Taylor Award (October, 2009) Four members of Holy Family’s faculty received the Ray Taylor Award at the University’s Opening Meeting on Tuesday, August 25. Professor of English, Communications and Theatre Arts Kathryn Osenlund, EdD, received the award to help finance the travel expenses required to teach a week-long class entitled “American Gangster” at Oxford University’s Summer School. Osenlund hopes the experience provides insights into alternative ways of teaching her courses at Holy Family. Director of the Masters of Arts in Criminal Justice Program Leanne Owen, PhD, Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology Daniel Hanks, III, PhD, and Associate Professor of Psychology Rochelle Robbins, PhD, received the award for their upcoming conference entitled 70 Years Later: The Global Impact of the Holocaust, which will be held at Holy Family in November. University Celebrates Obon Festival (October, 2009) The University community gathered on Tuesday, August 11, in the Library on the Northeast Philadelphia Campus to participate in a Japanese Obon Festival and Dance. More than 40 members of the University’s faculty and staff, as well as community members, were treated to traditional Japanese festival foods, snacks, and sweets. University Welcomes New Employees (October, 2009) Chad May began his tenure as Director of Institutional Research and Assessment in Academic Affairs effective August 24. May served as Director of Institutional Research at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey prior to joining Holy Family. He earned his MS in Educational Research from West Chester University, and his BA in Mathematics and History from Cabrini College. Abigail Johnson joined the School of Education as a Research Intern under the Life Connections Collaborative grant on August 10. Johnson holds a BS in Speech-Language Pathology from Bloomsburg University and has worked in the speech-language pathology field for both The Futures Health Care and Capitol Region Education Council. Worksite Wellness Week (October, 2009) The Health Services and Human Resources Departments invite all faculty and staff to participate in Worksite Wellness Week, which will be held the week of September 21. Academic Year Opening Meeting (September, 2009) The 2009-10 Academic Year Opening Meeting will take place in the Perzel Education & Technology Center (ETC) on Tuesday, August 25. A continental breakfast will be served at 8:30 am, with the meeting following at 9 am. All full-time faculty, administrators, and professional staff are expected to attend this meeting; part-time faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. Stevenson Lane Residence Dedication Ceremony (September, 2009) The Stevenson Lane Residence will be dedicated on Tuesday, August 25 at 12:30 pm. The Residence will house its first students in the fall and offers suite-style living with well thought-out design and amenities in line with contemporary campus housing. The Stevenson Lane Residence will house 148 students this year. Library Hosts Japanese Obon Festival and Dance (September, 2009) The Library hosts a Japanese Obon Festival and Dance on Tuesday, August 11 from 12:30-1:30 pm. A lunch of traditional Japanese festival foods, snacks and sweets will be served. Two Japanese folk dances will be taught to those in attendance. Opening Liturgy (September, 2009) On Wednesday, September 2, the University will celebrate The Opening Liturgy of the Academic Year. Share Christ in the Eucharist with the University community. Human Resources AVP Contributes to Newsletter (September, 2009) Associate Vice President for Human Resources Renee Rosenfeld, MBA, recently wrote two stories for the online issue of the Penjerdel Employee Benefits and Compensation Association newsletter. Rosenfeld’s articles dealt with the PEBA Annual Forum and an Employer Spotlight feature on Holy Family. Professor Awarded Diplomate Status (September, 2009) Associate Professor of Counseling Psychology Susan Belangee, PhD, was awarded Diplomate Status in the North American Society if Adlerian Psychology (NASAP). The Diplomate is the highest professional recognition offered by NASAP and is awarded to members who demonstrate the highest level of professional accomplishment in and contribution to Adlerian Psychology through the many fields in which it is applied. Belangee also presented a half-day workshop in Tucson, Arizona at the end of June at NASAP’s 57th Annual Conference. The presentation was entitled “Practical Uses of the BASIS-A in Clinical Practice, Couples Work, and Organizational Development.” Adjunct Presents to Graduate Students (September, 2009) Adjunct Professor of Religious Studies Francis Klose, MA, MEd, presented “Techno Friends: Technology in Youth and Young Adult Ministry” to graduate students in LaSalle University’s Master of Arts and Theology and Ministry program. Admissions Counselor Serves on Committee (September, 2009) Senior Admissions Counselor Melissa Collett, BA, served on the Conference Planning Committee for the Pennsylvania Association of College Admissions Counselors (PACAC). Collett attended various meetings during the past year and served on the group that planned and organized the sessions portion of the Conference. Fellow Admissions staff members Robert McIntyre, BA, Michelle Tumulo, MA and Chris Veitz, MEd attended the PACAC Conference held at the Split Rock Resort in June. Co-Op Continues Partnership with Comcast Corporation (September, 2009) The Cooperative Education Department recently placed a student with the Internal Audit Group of Comcast Corporation. Senior Kristie Boras’ full-time position will assist in the Corporation’s performance of the Sarbanes-Oxley 404 procedures, as well as other administrative tasks related to the management of the Sarbanes-Oxley work. Athletics Staff Named to Regional and National Committees (September, 2009) Director of Athletics Sandra Michael, MEd, and Assistant Athletic Director Kevin Huckel, MEd, have been appointed to NCAA Committees. Michael is serving a four-year term as a member of both the NCAA Division II Management Council and the NCAA Division II Membership Committee. Huckel is a member of the NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse East Region Committee. University Hosts SEPCHE Chemistry Workshop (September, 2009) Holy Family hosted the 2009 SEPCHE Chemistry Workshop the week of July 13. The five-day workshop for high school teachers from Philadelphia and its surrounding school districts was entitled “Natural Products Chemistry.” Funded by a SEPCHE grant, the workshop was designed to increase the teachers’ knowledge and technical skills as applied to natural products chemistry, the fundamental basis of drugs, and human health. Stevenson Lane Residence Statues Delivered (September, 2009) The three life-size bronze sculptures that adorn the main entrance of the Stevenson Lane Residence were delivered in late July. The statues – Jesus and Two Students, were designed by Sister Margaret Beaudette, SC. Sister Margaret was on hand to direct installation of the pieces, which depict Jesus Christ speaking to two intently listening college students. The three figures are fixed on a low-walled ledge and are positioned to allow ample room for students to sit with them. Holy Family Selected to Run Pathway to Teaching Program (September, 2009) Holy Family University was awarded $240,000 from the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board to run a program to put skilled Philadelphians back to work. Mayor Michael A. Nutter and officials from the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board announced the grant recipients on July 1. Through the award, the School of Education will enroll 40 individuals in a program called Pathway to Teaching, which will help eligible individuals obtain a Teacher Intern Certificate and enter the teaching profession. The two-year Pathway to Teaching program will provide eligible city residents with initial tuition aid, help preparing for the exam required to obtain the Teacher Intern Certificate, and assistance with job placement once the certificate is earned. University Joins Yellow Ribbon Program (September, 2009) President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, and Veterans Administration (VA) Education Advisor Constance Finch signed an agreement on Tuesday, June 30 that partnered the University with the VA Yellow Ribbon Program. Holy Family will offer additional tuition assistance to all incoming students who served after September 11, 2001. The program is scheduled to begin on August 1. The Yellow Ribbon Program, also called the Veterans Administration’s GI Education Enhancement Program, is a provision of the post-September 11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. Through the program, degree-granting institutions voluntarily agree to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest undergraduate tuition rate of a public state university. Under the Yellow Ribbon Program, Holy Family has agreed to contribute $1,502.50 per semester toward tuition for program participants. This is the maximum amount the University may contribute through the program. The VA, through the Yellow Ribbon Program, will match that amount. Holy Family Hosts Health & Wealth Expo (September, 2009) Radio personalities Dr. Anthony Mazzarelli and Steve Cordasco were the featured presenters at the Big Talker Health & Wealth Expo 2009, hosted by Holy Family University, on Saturday, June 6. The Expo included free health screenings, financial information, as well as product demos and samples and was broadcast on The Big Talker 1210, WPHT-AM. July 9: The University’s participation in the Veteran’s Administration’s Yellow Ribbon Program was documented in a piece in The Northeast Times entitled “Holy Family Quick to Help Veterans.” July 16: The Northeast Times published a news story about the School of Education’s Pathways to Teaching program under the headline “Holy Family Grant to Help Laid-Off Workers.” July 19: The Bucks County Courier Times published a news brief about the Natural Products Chemistry workshop hosted by the University the week of July 13. July 23: The Catholic Standard & Times published a story entitled “Holy Family University Receives Grant for Teacher Training.” The article explained the $240,000 contract the School of Education received to run the Pathways to Teaching program. Holy Family Welcomes New Employees (September, 2009) Billie Lafty will join the Division of Extended Learning team on August 29 as a part-time receptionist. Lafty is currently pursuing a BA in Psychology from Holy Family. Once there, Lafty will work with Ann Sabol, who was hired as an Admissions Counselor on June 29. Sabol had been an Admissions Representative and adjunct faculty member at Rosemont College and holds a Master’s in Counseling Psychology and a BA in Psychology from St. Joseph’s University. Sarah Beiter joins the Registrar’s office staff as Assistant Registrar/Technology on August 10. Beiter recently worked in customer service for Wegman’s Food Markets. She holds an MA in History from Villanova University and earned her BA from Canisius College. Nancy Wood transferred from part-time afternoon to full-time Switchboard Operator effective July 20. Pat Reed was hired to fill the part-time afternoon Switchboard Operator position. Reed is also an administrative assistant for Remax Milennium. John Ernst assumed the role of 3rd Shift Security Supervisor in Safety & Security on July 20. He had been a Public Safety Officer since 2005. Paul McKenna, a University Pool Officer, transferred to the position of full-time Public Safety Officer. Barbara Hannigan, RN, MSN, joined the Student Services Division as Interim Health Services Director. Hannigan most recently served as a faculty member in the School of Nursing & Allied Health Professions. Robert Denshuick joined the Academic Advising Center as an Academic Advisor on July 6. An alum with a BA in Sport Marketing-Management, Denshuick worked in the Purchasing Department for several years. Tamia Johnson-Wooten was named Assistant Director of Financial Aid effective June 23. Johnson-Wooten had been a financial aid counselor at Temple University and has also worked in the financial aid department at Pierce College and Moore College of Art and Design. Laura McNamara joined the staff in the Library as a Reference/Systems Librarian on July 20. McNamara held a similar position at Lebanon Valley College, where she also taught the college’s Capstone II course. McNamara earned her BS from Rochester Institute of Technology and holds a Master’s degree in Library Science from Clarion University. New Employee Orientation (September, 2009) All new faculty and staff hired since January 29 are invited to a new hire orientation program on Thursday, September 10. Topics will include the history of Holy Family, an overview of University policies, employee benefits, personal and professional development opportunities, creating a safe workplace, and embracing diversity. Tiger and Cub Café Fall Hours (September, 2009) The Tiger Café will re-open for employees on a limited schedule beginning Monday, August 10. From August 10-21, the Tiger Café will be open from 8 am – 2 pm Monday-Friday. Beginning August 24, the Tiger Café will be open from 8 am – 2 pm, and 3-7:30 pm on weeknights, and from 11 am – 6 pm on weekends. The Cub Café will open on August 26 with the following hours: Monday-Thursday from 8 am – 1:30 pm, and 2:30-8 pm, and Friday from 8 am – 1:30 pm. |
