Archives “Girls Gotta Run” Exhibit Featured in Art Gallery (November, 2009)The Women’s Caucus for Art (WCA) Philadelphia Chapter partnered with Girls Gotta Run Foundation to organize the University’s October art exhibit “Girls Gotta Run – Bodies in Motion.” The exhibit runs from October 6-31 in the University Art Gallery and features the works of 15 different artists. There will be an opening reception and an artist’s talk on Wednesday, October 7, from 6-8 pm. Holy Family Hosts 21st Annual Golf Classic (November, 2009) Holy Family’s 21st Annual Golf Classic benefiting student financial aid takes place on Wednesday, October 7 at Torresdale-Frankford Country Club. The day begins with registration at 9:30 am, followed by an 11 am barbecue lunch. Golfers tee off with a shotgun start at noon. Alumni Awards and Reunion Dinner (November, 2009) The annual Alumni Association Awards and Reunion Dinner will be held on Friday, October 23 at Belle Voir Manor in Bensalem. There will be a celebration of alumni excellence and achievement, with a special tribute to Assistant Vice President for Student Services Sister Patrice Feher, CSFN, MA ’66 for her 40 years of service to students. A special student activities scholarship fund has been established in her honor. Contributions to the Annual Fund for this designated gift are being requested at hfalumni.com/annual fund. Library to Hold Annual Halloween Party (November, 2009) The Library will host its annual Halloween party on Friday, October 30, from noon-2 pm. Speaker Series Explores Aramingo Canal (November, 2009) Holy Family, in conjunction with Glen Foerd on the Delaware, is co-sponsoring a PowerPoint presentation entitled, “Rediscovering a Forgotten Public Highway: The Rise, Fall, and Archaeological Rebirth of the Aramingo Canal,” on Friday, November 6, at 7 pm in the Perzel Education and Technology Center Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. Douglas Mooney, a Senior Archaeologist with the URS Corporation, who directed the recent investigations of the Aramingo Canal, will be the featured speaker. Honor Society Presents an Evening of Mathematical Suspense (November, 2009) Holy Family’s mathematics honor society, under the direction of Sister Marcella Louise Wallowicz, CSFN, presents an Evening of Mathematical Suspense on Thursday, October 29, at 7 pm in Campus Center Room 115. The event is free and open to all members of the University community. A special prize will be awarded to the person who correctly solves the murder mystery. RSVP to S. Holocaust Conference (November, 2009) The Graduate Programs of the School of Arts and Sciences at Holy Family University will present a two-day interdisciplinary conference entitled "70 Years Later: The Global Impact of the Holocaust" to be held on November 14-15, 2009. Counseling Center Workshop Postponed (November, 2009) The Counseling Center has postponed the "Forming Healthy Relationships - Friendships and Intimacies" workshop, previously scheduled for Tuesday, October 6. The Counseling Center will be closed on October 6. In the event of a behavioral health emergency, please follow the University protocol for Medical and Mental Health Response posted in classrooms, corridors, and offices. Associate Professor of History Tours Turkey (November, 2009) Associate Professor of History Cathlyn Mariscotti, PhD, toured Turkey with the Dialogue Forum of Philadelphia in July. The interfaith trip included eight people from various religious backgrounds and featured visits to historical areas that are important to Christian, Jewish, and Muslim faiths. The group went to Mardin and Urfa (purported home of Abraham) in southeastern Anatolia; traveled to Izmir and saw Ephesus; went to Cappadocia, where early Christians hid and Christian ascetics lived and formed churches in the caves; and visited Rumi's tomb and witnessed the Mevlevis (whirling dervishes) in Konya. The final destination was Istanbul where Mariscotti visited Hagia Sopia, and the Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace. Professor of Education Co-Presents Workshop (November, 2009) Professor of Education Lynn Orlando, PhD, and six of her graduate students presented a workshop entitled “Language and Literacy Development for Early Learning” at the 21st Annual Fall Early Childhood Conference held at Bucks County Community College on October 3. The workshop was presented twice at the Conference and provided hands-on and minds-on activities to stimulate language and literacy. Adjunct Professor Passes Exam (November, 2009) Adjunct Professor of Criminal Justice John A. Prendergast, MS, CFE, passed all four parts of the Certified Fraud Examiners (CFE) exam and has been awarded the designation of CFE from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Assistant Business Professor Named Who’s Who (November, 2009) Assistant Professor of Management-Marketing and Business Administration Andrew Liebman, MBA, was included in Cambridge's Who's Who 2010 as a Business Administration Faculty member representing the Philadelphia region. Scholarship Stewardship Dinner Honors Students and Benefactors (November, 2009) Holy Family’s scholars and stewards gathered together on Wednesday at the University’s Third Annual Scholarship Stewardship Dinner, held at Torresdale-Frankford Country Club. The event celebrates Holy Family’s numerous scholarship recipients and the benefactors who made those scholarships available. Many of the students met their benefactors for the first time at the event. Three new scholarships were awarded in 2009-10, including the Catholic Kolping Society Scholarship, the Ulysses J. Connor, Jr. Memorial Award, and the Christian and Bobby Himes-Viskovich Memorial Scholarship. Approximately 130 students received more than $130,000 in scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year. Rabbi Explains Spirituality of Yom Kippur (November, 2009) Rabbi Jerry Lauterbach spoke to a crowd of Holy Family students, faculty, and staff on September 24, explaining the spirituality of Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement. Rabbi Lauterbach showcased his own prayer shawl (talith), as well as the white gown worn by worshippers on Yom Kippur to symbolize purity. He blew into the shofar – a well known symbol of Rosh Hashanah made from a ram’s horn. The Rabbi passed on the five steps of repentance stressed on Yom Kippur: recognition of sin, the process of self discovery, inner regret, confession, and acceptance of a sense of optimism. The presentation concluded with a moving rendition of the Kol Nidre, an Aramaic declaration recited before the beginning of the evening service on Yom Kippur. University Celebrates Constitution Day (November, 2009) The University community participated in the national Constitution Day celebration on September 17. Events included a video presentation, a lecture by Professor of Philosophy Arthur Grugan, PhD, and a recitation of the Constitution’s Preamble. A “Freedom Lunch” was served in the Campus Center Commons. September 18, 2009: The Philadelphia Inquirer published a news brief about the SEPCHE Art Faculty Exhibit, which included the work of Holy Family University artists. September 20, 2009: BSN Chair Karen Montalto, PhD, provided comments regarding job prospects for nursing graduates in a Bucks County Courier Times article headlined “Recession alleviates area nursing shortage.” September 24, 2009: Assistant Director of Athletics Ashley Cameron, MBA, and Cross Country Head Coach Daryl McKeever, were quoted in a Northeast Times sports article headlined “The Peacemaker,” which profiled current graduate student, Jen Andrews ‘06. Open Enrollment & Employee Benefit Fair (November, 2009) Open enrollment for employee benefits takes place through Friday, October 16. All employees and faculty are invited to stop by the Employee Benefit Fair in Campus Center Room 115 on Tuesday, October 6 between 11:30 am – 2 pm. Many of our employee benefit vendors will be available to answer questions about our options for the upcoming year. Flu Shots Offered (November, 2009) The Health Services and Human Resources Departments are pleased to offer flu shots to employees and faculty this fall through WorkHealth of ARIA Health. To get your flu vaccine, stop by Holy Family Hall Room 316 on Thursday, October 22 from 1-3 pm. Shots are $20 per person for Holy Family employees and faculty, and $23 for all others. Payment is required in full that afternoon by cash only, and receipts will be available upon request. Advance reservations are not required; shots will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis. Independence Blue Cross is offering flu shot reimbursements to their subscribers again this year. Reimbursement forms will be available that day for your convenience. Constitution Day (October, 2009) The University will honor the signing of the United States Constitution on Thursday, September 17. The celebration begins at 10 am with a video titled “A Conversation on the Constitution.” The video will be shown in the ETC Lobby and the Campus Center Commons. It will be followed by a lecture given by Professor of Philosophy Arthur Grugan, PhD, at 11:10 am in the ETC Auditorium. The lecture is entitled “The First Amendment: The Free Expression Clause.” The day wraps up on the Campus Center Patio between noon and 12:45 with a free lunch and recitation of the Constitution. Second Middle States Planning Day Scheduled (October, 2009) A second Planning Day for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education is scheduled for Friday, September 25. Honorary Degree Committee Seeks Nominees (October, 2009) The Honorary Degree Committee of Holy Family’s Board of Trustees is asking for the submission of names of potential recipients of an Honorary Degree to be conferred at Commencement 2010. Nominees must exhibit outstanding performance in a specific area of expertise; exhibit leadership attainments and unselfish contributions of service to civic, cultural and charitable agencies; be examples of dedication, compassion, vision, courage, moral character and integrity; be role models in showing a sense of responsibility to God, family and others; and embody the core values Holy Family University seeks to instill in its students. Tutor Presents Paper (October, 2009) Irene Klosko, PhD, from the Center for Academic Enhancement, presented a paper entitled Suffering and Sympathy in Mrs. Dalloway at the 19th Annual International Conference on Virginia Woolf at Fordham University in New York, NY. The Conference ran from June 4-7, 2009. Business Professor Publishes Article (October, 2009) Professor of Business Administration Anthony DiPrimio, PhD, had an article entitled Mistakes a CEO Must Avoid published in the Academic and Business Research Institute Journal. DiPrimio will present the paper at the association conference this fall. He is currently working on his third book, Corporate Leadership and Governance. The book will feature a foreword by President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, a monograph by Dean of the School of Business Administration Jan Duggar, PhD, and interviews with various local university presidents. Associate Professor of Education Writes Book (October, 2009) Associate Professor of Education Helen Hoffner, EdD, wrote Making Connections: Activities and Lesson Plans that Connect Literacy Skills to Standards, which will be published by Corwin Press in 2010. The book helps novice and veteran teachers meet instructional standards with a broad spectrum of activities addressing all areas of the language arts: reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing. Writing Professor Interviewed on BBC (October, 2009) Assistant Professor of Writing Amalia Gnanadesikan, PhD, gave an interview for the program "Questions, Questions" on BBC Radio 4 about the direction that scripts are written in. It aired in England on August 20. Susan Rogers Earns Magna cum Laude Honors (October, 2009) Susan Rogers, MA, from the Radiologic Science Department, completed her master’s degree in forensic psychology this past July. Rogers began the program in August 2007 and completed it with Magna cum Laude honors. Her graduate project “An analysis of cognitive development: Can adolescents ever be considered legally competent to stand trial based on research findings regarding adolescent cognitive development?” is currently under review by the Journal of Forensic Psychiatry & Psychology for publication. Professor of Art, Adjunct Professors Exhibiting at SEPCHE Show (October, 2009) Professor of Art Pamela Flynn, MFA, and adjunct art professors Nancy Sophy, Nicole Dul, Jerry Bennett, and David Bowman will be exhibiting in the SEPCHE Art Show held at Rosemont College from September 10 – October 3. Flynn also is exhibiting from September 13 – October 18 at the “Four Cultural Stories” show at the Pierro Gallery, located at 5 Mead Street, South Orange, NJ. She will present an artist’s talk at 2 pm on Sunday, September 13, followed by the opening reception from 3-5 pm. Library Receives Collection on Japan (October, 2009) The Holy Family University Library is one of the U.S. libraries selected to receive a collection of books about Japan through The Nippon Foundation’s program, “100 Books for Understanding Contemporary Japan.” The collection will feature books about Japanese politics, economics, business, society, culture, literature, and history. The Library will be receiving the books soon and will create a special display to mark the acquisition. Parking Guidelines and Shuttle Schedule (October, 2009) These are the parking guidelines for the fall semester: Faculty (blue/white permit) are to park in the ETC and the lot in front of Aquinas Hall. Please fill these lots before parking on the Holy Family lot. This will make more spots available for Administration and Professional staff. Professional Staff (green permit) are to park in front and behind Holy Family Hall. Any overflow should park at St. Katherine's or the lower sports lot, below the Campus Center. Math Professor Submits Review (October, 2009) For many years, Sister Marcella Louise Wallowicz, CSFN, MA, has served as a referee in the area of History of Math for the KME math journal Pentagon. This past June, S. Marcella submitted a review/critique of the article “The Lady Philosopher: Hypatia of Alexandria” for inclusion in the journal. In August, S. Marcella was invited by Pearson Prentice Hall publishers to participate in a pre-revision review of “Statistics: The Art and Science of Learning from Data 2e”, by Agresti/Franklin in preparation for a new edition. S. Marcella has submitted a substantive review of the first seven chapters of the text. Stevenson Lane Dedication (October, 2009) The Stevenson Lane Residence was dedicated on Tuesday in front of a crowd of 200 faculty, staff, students, dignitaries and friends of Holy Family. Students are living in the Residence for the first time this semester. Students led tours through the building after the ceremony. The five-story brick and glass building offers the style and amenities students have come to expect in contemporary campus housing. The building wing was dedicated to Sister Patrice Feher, CSFN, MA, who has served the University’s student life program for more than 40 years. S. Patrice is currently Assistant Vice President of Student Services. Outside the main building entrance sit three life-sized bronze statues depicting Jesus Christ with two college students. The sculpture was designed by Sister Margaret Beaudette, SC, of Bronx, New York, especially for the new student residence. Residence Life Staff Has “Supper with the Sisters” (October, 2009) Members of the Residence Life staff, as well as resident advisors, joined the Sisters at Delaney Hall for supper on Thursday, August 13. The group shared wings, pizza and good conversation. The event was organized by Vice President of Student Affairs Sister Marcella Binkowski, CSFN, EdD. Four Faculty Receive Ray Taylor Award (October, 2009) Four members of Holy Family’s faculty received the Ray Taylor Award at the University’s Opening Meeting on Tuesday, August 25. Professor of English, Communications and Theatre Arts Kathryn Osenlund, EdD, received the award to help finance the travel expenses required to teach a week-long class entitled “American Gangster” at Oxford University’s Summer School. Osenlund hopes the experience provides insights into alternative ways of teaching her courses at Holy Family. Director of the Masters of Arts in Criminal Justice Program Leanne Owen, PhD, Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology Daniel Hanks, III, PhD, and Associate Professor of Psychology Rochelle Robbins, PhD, received the award for their upcoming conference entitled 70 Years Later: The Global Impact of the Holocaust, which will be held at Holy Family in November. The Award will fund the honorarium for a keynote speaker for the two-day, scholarly conference. University Celebrates Obon Festival (October, 2009) The University community gathered on Tuesday, August 11, in the Library on the Northeast Philadelphia Campus to participate in a Japanese Obon Festival and Dance. More than 40 members of the University’s faculty and staff, as well as community members, were treated to traditional Japanese festival foods, snacks, and sweets. Attendees also were treated to two Japanese folk dances. University Welcomes New Employees (October, 2009) Chad May began his tenure as Director of Institutional Research and Assessment in Academic Affairs effective August 24. May served as Director of Institutional Research at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey prior to joining Holy Family. He earned his MS in Educational Research from West Chester University, and his BA in Mathematics and History from Cabrini College. Abigail Johnson joined the School of Education as a Research Intern under the Life Connections Collaborative grant on August 10. Johnson holds a BS in Speech-Language Pathology from Bloomsburg University and has worked in the speech-language pathology field for both The Futures Health Care and Capitol Region Education Council. Worksite Wellness Week (October, 2009) The Health Services and Human Resources Departments invite all faculty and staff to participate in Worksite Wellness Week, which will be held the week of September 21. FERPA Training Sessions (October, 2009) Human Resources, in cooperation with the Division of Academic Affairs, invite all faculty and staff to attend one of four identical FERPA training sessions. Academic Year Opening Meeting (September, 2009) The 2009-10 Academic Year Opening Meeting will take place in the Perzel Education & Technology Center (ETC) on Tuesday, August 25. A continental breakfast will be served at 8:30 am, with the meeting following at 9 am. All full-time faculty, administrators, and professional staff are expected to attend this meeting; part-time faculty and staff are encouraged to attend. Lunch will be served in the Campus Center Dining Commons following the Stevenson Lane Residence Dedication ceremony. Stevenson Lane Residence Dedication Ceremony (September, 2009) The Stevenson Lane Residence will be dedicated on Tuesday, August 25 at 12:30 pm. The Residence will house its first students in the fall and offers suite-style living with well thought-out design and amenities in line with contemporary campus housing. The Stevenson Lane Residence will house 148 students this year. Library Hosts Japanese Obon Festival and Dance (September, 2009) The Library hosts a Japanese Obon Festival and Dance on Tuesday, August 11 from 12:30-1:30 pm. A lunch of traditional Japanese festival foods, snacks and sweets will be served. Two Japanese folk dances will be taught to those in attendance. Opening Liturgy (September, 2009) On Wednesday, September 2, the University will celebrate The Opening Liturgy of the Academic Year. Share Christ in the Eucharist with the University community. Human Resources AVP Contributes to Newsletter (September, 2009) Associate Vice President for Human Resources Renee Rosenfeld, MBA, recently wrote two stories for the online issue of the Penjerdel Employee Benefits and Compensation Association newsletter. Rosenfeld’s articles dealt with the PEBA Annual Forum and an Employer Spotlight feature on Holy Family. Professor Awarded Diplomate Status (September, 2009) Associate Professor of Counseling Psychology Susan Belangee, PhD, was awarded Diplomate Status in the North American Society if Adlerian Psychology (NASAP). The Diplomate is the highest professional recognition offered by NASAP and is awarded to members who demonstrate the highest level of professional accomplishment in and contribution to Adlerian Psychology through the many fields in which it is applied. Belangee also presented a half-day workshop in Tucson, Arizona at the end of June at NASAP’s 57th Annual Conference. The presentation was entitled “Practical Uses of the BASIS-A in Clinical Practice, Couples Work, and Organizational Development.” Adjunct Presents to Graduate Students (September, 2009) Adjunct Professor of Religious Studies Francis Klose, MA, MEd, presented “Techno Friends: Technology in Youth and Young Adult Ministry” to graduate students in LaSalle University’s Master of Arts and Theology and Ministry program. Admissions Counselor Serves on Committee (September, 2009) Senior Admissions Counselor Melissa Collett, BA, served on the Conference Planning Committee for the Pennsylvania Association of College Admissions Counselors (PACAC). Collett attended various meetings during the past year and served on the group that planned and organized the sessions portion of the Conference. Fellow Admissions staff members Robert McIntyre, BA, Michelle Tumulo, MA and Chris Veitz, MEd attended the PACAC Conference held at the Split Rock Resort in June. Co-Op Continues Partnership with Comcast Corporation (September, 2009) The Cooperative Education Department recently placed a student with the Internal Audit Group of Comcast Corporation. Senior Kristie Boras’ full-time position will assist in the Corporation’s performance of the Sarbanes-Oxley 404 procedures, as well as other administrative tasks related to the management of the Sarbanes-Oxley work. Athletics Staff Named to Regional and National Committees (September, 2009) Director of Athletics Sandra Michael, MEd, and Assistant Athletic Director Kevin Huckel, MEd, have been appointed to NCAA Committees. Michael is serving a four-year term as a member of both the NCAA Division II Management Council and the NCAA Division II Membership Committee. Huckel is a member of the NCAA Division II Women’s Lacrosse East Region Committee. University Hosts SEPCHE Chemistry Workshop (September, 2009) Holy Family hosted the 2009 SEPCHE Chemistry Workshop the week of July 13. The five-day workshop for high school teachers from Philadelphia and its surrounding school districts was entitled “Natural Products Chemistry.” Funded by a SEPCHE grant, the workshop was designed to increase the teachers’ knowledge and technical skills as applied to natural products chemistry, the fundamental basis of drugs, and human health. Stevenson Lane Residence Statues Delivered (September, 2009) The three life-size bronze sculptures that adorn the main entrance of the Stevenson Lane Residence were delivered in late July. The statues – Jesus and Two Students, were designed by Sister Margaret Beaudette, SC. Sister Margaret was on hand to direct installation of the pieces, which depict Jesus Christ speaking to two intently listening college students. The three figures are fixed on a low-walled ledge and are positioned to allow ample room for students to sit with them. Holy Family Selected to Run Pathway to Teaching Program (September, 2009) Holy Family University was awarded $240,000 from the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board to run a program to put skilled Philadelphians back to work. Mayor Michael A. Nutter and officials from the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board announced the grant recipients on July 1. Through the award, the School of Education will enroll 40 individuals in a program called Pathway to Teaching, which will help eligible individuals obtain a Teacher Intern Certificate and enter the teaching profession. The two-year Pathway to Teaching program will provide eligible city residents with initial tuition aid, help preparing for the exam required to obtain the Teacher Intern Certificate, and assistance with job placement once the certificate is earned. University Joins Yellow Ribbon Program (September, 2009) President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, and Veterans Administration (VA) Education Advisor Constance Finch signed an agreement on Tuesday, June 30 that partnered the University with the VA Yellow Ribbon Program. Holy Family will offer additional tuition assistance to all incoming students who served after September 11, 2001. The program is scheduled to begin on August 1. The Yellow Ribbon Program, also called the Veterans Administration’s GI Education Enhancement Program, is a provision of the post-September 11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. Through the program, degree-granting institutions voluntarily agree to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest undergraduate tuition rate of a public state university. Under the Yellow Ribbon Program, Holy Family has agreed to contribute $1,502.50 per semester toward tuition for program participants. This is the maximum amount the University may contribute through the program. The VA, through the Yellow Ribbon Program, will match that amount. Holy Family Hosts Health & Wealth Expo (September, 2009) Radio personalities Dr. Anthony Mazzarelli and Steve Cordasco were the featured presenters at the Big Talker Health & Wealth Expo 2009, hosted by Holy Family University, on Saturday, June 6. The Expo included free health screenings, financial information, as well as product demos and samples and was broadcast on The Big Talker 1210, WPHT-AM. Holy Family Welcomes New Employees (September, 2009) Billie Lafty will join the Division of Extended Learning team on August 29 as a part-time receptionist. Lafty is currently pursuing a BA in Psychology from Holy Family. Once there, Lafty will work with Ann Sabol, who was hired as an Admissions Counselor on June 29. Sabol had been an Admissions Representative and adjunct faculty member at Rosemont College and holds a Master’s in Counseling Psychology and a BA in Psychology from St. Joseph’s University. Sarah Beiter joins the Registrar’s office staff as Assistant Registrar/Technology on August 10. Beiter recently worked in customer service for Wegman’s Food Markets. She holds an MA in History from Villanova University and earned her BA from Canisius College. Nancy Wood transferred from part-time afternoon to full-time Switchboard Operator effective July 20. Pat Reed was hired to fill the part-time afternoon Switchboard Operator position. Reed is also an administrative assistant for Remax Milennium. John Ernst assumed the role of 3rd Shift Security Supervisor in Safety & Security on July 20. He had been a Public Safety Officer since 2005. Paul McKenna, a University Pool Officer, transferred to the position of full-time Public Safety Officer. Barbara Hannigan, RN, MSN, joined the Student Services Division as Interim Health Services Director. Hannigan most recently served as a faculty member in the School of Nursing & Allied Health Professions. Robert Denshuick joined the Academic Advising Center as an Academic Advisor on July 6. An alum with a BA in Sport Marketing-Management, Denshuick worked in the Purchasing Department for several years. Tamia Johnson-Wooten was named Assistant Director of Financial Aid effective June 23. Johnson-Wooten had been a financial aid counselor at Temple University and has also worked in the financial aid department at Pierce College and Moore College of Art and Design. Laura McNamara joined the staff in the Library as a Reference/Systems Librarian on July 20. McNamara held a similar position at Lebanon Valley College, where she also taught the college’s Capstone II course. McNamara earned her BS from Rochester Institute of Technology and holds a Master’s degree in Library Science from Clarion University. Professor to Present at Convention (August, 2009) Writing Coordinator and Associate Professor of English Janice Showler, PhD, will present “A Heuristic Approach to First-Year Composition” at the 2009 National Council of Teachers of English Annual Convention in Philadelphia in November. The presentation is an expanded version of the one Showler gave at the University’s Faculty Development Day. She will present on a panel entitled “Functional Strategies for Teaching College Composition.” Nursing Faculty Receive Technology Grant (August, 2009) Associate Professor of Nursing Mary Wombwell, EdD, CNE, RN, and Nursing Simulation Coordinator Kathleen Kelly-West, MBA, MSN, RN, are recipients of a Health Information Technology Scholars (HITS) grant from the National League for Nursing for the 2009 year. Wombwell and Kelly-West are in the process of further integrating technology into the nursing curriculum for the fall 2009 semester. The duo is among 52 scholars nationwide who received the award this year. As part of the Informatics across the Curriculum sub-group, they are working with a dozen colleagues around the country to implement an integrated technology project at their respective institutions. To date, Wombwell and Kelly-West have completed six weeks of web-based modules and discussion groups and attended a conference for all grant recipients in Indianapolis last March. Upon their return to Holy Family, they conducted a survey of the nursing faculty on current technology-based teaching methods. University Conducts 52nd Commencement (August, 2009) Holy Family University celebrated its 52nd Commencement Ceremonies at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia on Monday, May 11. The honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters was presented to three recipients: University of Pennsylvania Professor of Engineering Joseph Bordogna, PhD; Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics President and Chief Administrative Officer J. Lindsey Bradley, MA, MHCA, FACHE; and Co-Founder and President of the Moyer Foundation and Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer, BS. In addition, the University honored the 50th Anniversary Class of 1959, including President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD. Bishop Maginnis Receives Presidential Award (August, 2009) The Most Reverend Robert P. Maginnis, DD, Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, is the 2009 recipient of the Holy Family University President’s Award. Bishop Maginnis was honored at the Presidential Award Dinner on Thursday, May 28. He was ordained a priest in May 1961. In his nearly 50 years of service, Bishop Maginnis rose to Director of Youth Activities for the Archdiocese; was named a Prelate to Pope John Paul II; was appointed to the Synod of Bishops in Rome; and was appointed Administrative Overseer for the Secretariat for Evangelization. The President’s Award is presented to American Catholics and international Catholic leaders who show distinguished leadership on behalf of the Church and the Catholic community in the arena of politics and public policy. The award was first presented in 1990 and has been awarded on an annual basis since 1994. Bishop Maginnis is the 17th recipient of the President’s Award. Third Annual Blue Mass Celebrated (August, 2009) Holy Family honored and prayed for the protection of police, fire, and emergency personnel during its third annual Blue Mass on Friday, May 8 in the Campus Center Gymnasium. Campus Minister Reverend James MacNew, OSFS, officiated at the Mass with concelebrant Auxiliary Bishop Joseph P. McFadden. More than 100 police and fire officers from city districts and suburban townships attended alongside Holy Family’s Campus Security officers. The majority of Holy Family University’s security personnel are retired police officers. University Director of Safety and Security Joseph F. McBride – a retired Philadelphia Police Department Sergeant – coordinated the program. Retiring Professors Honored at Commencement (August, 2009) Four retiring faculty members were recognized for their service to the University at Commencement: Assistant Professor of Mathematics Carl P. Anthony, EdD; Professor of Education Phyllis J. Anthony, EdD; Professor Emeritus of Nursing Kathleen A. McMullen, PhD; and Assistant Professor of Nursing Mary Jean Ricci, MSN. A Philadelphia Police Officer since 1999, Vivino worked previously as an armored car driver for Brink’s Incorporated, and as a security guard for Philadelphia’s Federal Reserve Bank. Commencement Day Information (June, 2009) Administrators, full-time faculty, and professional staff who plan to ride a motor coach from the Northeast Campus to the Kimmel Center for Commencement on Monday, May 11 should be at the Campus Center by 7:30 am. Upon arrival at the Kimmel Center, the buses will unload in front of the South Broad Street main entrance. Approximately 20 minutes after the afternoon baccalaureate ceremony concludes, the buses will load in the same location for the return trip. If you have academic attire, please don’t forget your attire and any personal belongings when getting on or leaving your bus. If you are not returning to campus on the bus, please inform your bus coordinator. Regina Hobaugh, Jan Duggar, and Bruce Rachild will serve as bus coordinators. Speaker Series Focuses on Lincoln Highway (June, 2009) The second installment of this year's Holy Family-Glen Foerd on the Delaware History Speaker Series, will take place on Friday, May 8. Preservationist Melinda Crawford visits to present "The Lincoln Highway in Pennsylvania ," at 7 pm in the Perzel Education & Technology Center (ETC). The event, which is co-sponsored by Holy Family and Glen Foerd, is free and open to the public. Crawford, the Executive Director of Preservation Pennsylvania, has worked in the historic preservation field for 25 years. The Lincoln Highway, America's oldest coast-to-coast highway, stretches from Times Square in New York City to San Francisco. This presentation is a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, sponsored in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Baccalaureate Mass Held on Campus (June, 2009) The Mass of Thanksgiving honoring all of our graduates and the Class of 1959 will be held at 5 pm on Saturday, May 9, in the Campus Center. Education Instructor Defends Dissertation (June, 2009) Education Instructor Donna Rafter, EdD, defended her dissertation “Teaching Literacy in Preschool: A Case Study of Negotiating Policy and Practice” at Rutgers University on March 31. The successful defense was the culmination of 11 years of work towards her doctorate. Graduate Admissions Director Represents Honor Society (June, 2009) Director of Graduate Admissions Margaret Bacheler, MBA, will represent the Phi Beta Kappa Society this spring at local chapter induction ceremonies. Adjunct Invited to Read Work (June, 2009) Adjunct Professor of English Daniel Picker, MA, was invited to read his poetry to the English Club of Rutgers University – Camden. In addition, Picker has two new poems that will be published this spring in Rune: MIT Journal of Arts & Letters. When published, they will be his fourth and fifth poems published at MIT. MIS Chair Serves as Judge (June, 2009) Chair of the MIS Department Tom Martin, PhD, was a judge at the Annual Electrical and Systems Engineering Senior Demonstration Day at the University of Pennsylvania on April 23. The following day, Martin spoke to the seventh grade at William Allen Middle School in Moorestown, NJ, on “Cyberwarfare, Digital Forensics, and Proper Use of the Internet.” Business Professor Publishes Article (June, 2009) Assistant Professor of Finance Cao Jiang, PhD, and Temple University Professor Jongmoo Jay Choi, had an article entitled “Does Multinationality Matter? Implications of Operational Hedging for the Exchange Risk Exposure” accepted for publication in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Banking and Finance. Science Faculty Mentor Research Students (June, 2009) Associate Professor of Biology Robert Cordero, PhD, and Assistant Professor of Chemistry Kishore Bagga, PhD, mentored students doing research in the University’s Labs during the school year. The quartet of students presented their findings at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) at the University of Wisconsin at LaCrosse. Two of Cordero’s students presented data in the form of a poster and manuscript that will be published in the Proceedings of NCUR. Both of Bagga’s students also presented posters and submitted manuscripts to be published in the Proceedings. Scholarship Ball Raises Money for Student Financial Aid (June, 2009) In excess of 250 people attended Holy Family’s Scholarship Ball 2009 on Friday, April 17 in the Crystal Tea Room of the Wanamaker Building. The University grossed in excess of $400,000, with proceeds from the evening benefitting student financial aid. University President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, presented the Corporate Leadership Award to Robert D. Falese, Jr., Chairman of Commercial Banking for TD Bank. Holy Family Renews Transfer Agreement with CCP (June, 2009) Holy Family University and Community College of Philadelphia (CCP) celebrated the renewal of their transfer agreement on April 23. The agreement allows CCP graduates to transfer seamlessly to Holy Family at junior status. The two institutions celebrated the agreement with a program that ended in a signing ceremony led by Holy Family University President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, and CCP President Stephen M. Curtis, PhD. Under the Transfer Articulation Agreement a student who enrolls at CCP may complete a special transfer application form declaring the intent to transfer into Holy Family. When that student completes his or her Associate’s Degree and meets Holy Family’s admissions criteria, the student may transfer into the University at junior status in 11 different academic majors. Holy Family has similar agreements with Burlington County College and Bucks County Community College, and is developing similar partnerships with other area community and county colleges. University Named Regional Autism Center (June, 2009) Holy Family University was named one of five Regional Autism Centers for the Eastern part of Pennsylvania by the State’s Secretary of Public Welfare. Funded through the Department of Public Welfare, each center represents a partnership of medical centers, centers of autism research and services, universities, and other providers of services involved in the treatment and care of adults and children with an autism spectrum disorder. Holy Family joins Drexel University, Lehigh University, and the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Autism Research, as well as the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, as an Eastern regional center. Holy Family Signs Agreement with Chilean University (June, 2009) Holy Family University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Chile’s Universidad Arturo Prat on April 8 to explore academic partnerships and the exchange of faculty and students. President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, signed the agreement with Arturo Prat’s Director of Research Jorge Farias Avendano, PhD. Dean of the School of Education Leonard Soroka, EdD, and Associate Professor of Education Roger Gee, PhD, were instrumental in negotiating the agreement between the two institutions. In January six professors from Arturo Prat took a two-week English language studies course with Dr. Gee and stayed on the Holy Family campus. Universidad Arturo Prat is located in northern Chile near the Pacific coast in the city of Iquique. The university offers undergraduate degree programs. Holy Family has similar international partnerships with universities in Poland, China, Philippines, Puerto Rico, and South Korea. Tripodi comes to Holy Family from ACCORD Corporation in Wellsville, NY, where he was District Liaison. He holds a BA in Sociology from St. Bonaventure University in St. Bonaventure, NY. Tim Smalarz will join the Registrar's Office as Assistant Registrar/Scheduler in May. Tim most recently served as an academic coordinator with Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. Smalarz earned a BA in History and English from La Salle University and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Education from the same institution. Senior Thesis on Display at April Art Show (May, 2009) Holy Family senior Jessica Notis displays her senior thesis exhibit entitled “Positive Energy” throughout the month of April in the University Art Gallery. The opening reception will take place on Tuesday, April 7, from 6-8 pm. Dance the Night Away at the Scholarship Ball (May, 2009) The 2009 Scholarship Ball will take place on Friday, April 17, in the Crystal Tea Room of the Wanamaker Building. Now in its 16th year, the Ball benefits student financial aid, and will honor TD Bank Chairman of Commercial Banking Robert D. Falese, Jr. with the 2009 Corporate Leadership Award. The evening begins with cocktails at 6:30 pm, followed by dinner and dancing until midnight. Tickets are discounted to $150 for University employees. Inaugural Hall of Fame Class to be Inducted (May, 2009) The inaugural class of the Holy Family University Athletics Hall of Fame will be inducted on Sunday, April 19, at 1 pm in a ceremony at the Torresdale-Frankford Country Club. Athletic Director Sandy Michael, MA headlines the group of five honorees, which includes former men’s basketball players Mike Glitz and Jim Schultice, former men’s soccer player Jim Milligan, and former women’s basketball player Debbie Schopfer. Holy Family to Celebrate Blue Mass (May, 2009) The University will hold its third annual Blue Mass to pray for the protection of police, fire, and emergency responders on Friday, May 8, at 11 am in the Campus Center Lower Lobby. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey is expected to attend, and other invited guests include Auxiliary Bishop Joseph McFadden, Chief Inspector Jim Tiano, Sergeant Brian McBride of Central Detectives, and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 President John McNesby. The majority of the University’s security personnel are retired police officers. Speaker Series Re-scheduled (May, 2009) The second installment of this year’s Holy Family-Glen Foerd on the Delaware History Speaker Series, originally scheduled for Friday, March 20 has been re-scheduled for Friday, May 8. Preservationist Melinda Crawford visits to present “The Lincoln Highway in Pennsylvania,” at 7 pm in the Perzel Education & Technology Center (ETC). Please note the new location. The event, which is co-sponsored by Holy Family and Glen Foerd, is free and open to the public. Crawford, the Executive Director of Preservation Pennsylvania, has worked in the historic preservation field for 25 years. The Lincoln Highway, America's oldest coast-to-coast highway, stretches from Times Square in New York City to San Francisco. This presentation is a program of the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, sponsored in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. Commencement at the Kimmel Center (May, 2009) Holy Family will conduct both its graduate and undergraduate Commencement ceremonies in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia on Monday, May 11. The graduate ceremony will take place at 9:30 am, followed by the undergraduate ceremony at 12:30 pm. The ceremony will be simulcast to the Perzel Education & Technology Center (ETC) for those unable to attend at the Kimmel Center. In addition to viewing the ceremonies in the ETC, Commencement can be viewed online via the Internet by visiting holyfamily.edu and clicking the commencement button or selecting commencement from the drop down menu. Nursing Professor Wins Lindback Award (May, 2009) Professor of Nursing Cathleen Jenner, PhD, RN, has been named the University’s 2009 winner of the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching. The award will be officially presented to Dr. Jenner at Commencement on Monday, May 11. Dr. Jenner began her teaching career in 1972 at St. Agnes Hospital School of Nursing. She spent nearly 20 years in various administrative and clinical positions before arriving at Holy Family in 1993 as a Nursing Instructor. Dr. Jenner served in various positions until 2007, when she was promoted to Professor of Nursing. Dr. Jenner received her nursing diploma from St. Agnes in 1969, her BSN from the University of the State of New York, Regent's College, in 1987, her MSN from LaSalle University in 1990, and her PhD from Widener University in 2001. She has served Holy Family on a number of committees, both in the School of Nursing and Allied Health Professions as well as University-wide, has been published in nursing journals, and received grants for nursing research. Professor of Art Exhibits Works (May, 2009) Professor of Art Pamela Flynn, MFA, is exhibiting “Road Shrines: A Peripheral Blur” at the Phoenix Gallery in New York City from April 29 – May 23. Nursing Professor to Deliver Keynote Speech (May, 2009) Professor of Nursing Gloria Kersey-Matusiak, RN, PhD, will deliver the keynote speech at the Wilkes University Department of Nursing Educational and Professional Development Fair on Thursday, April 16. Dr. Matusiak is scheduled to present “The Role of the Culturally Competent Nurse in Today’s Multicultural Health Care Environment.” Political Science Professor Accompanies Students to Lobby Day (May, 2009) Associate Professor of Political Science Stephen Medvec, PhD, took three students to Harrisburg on March 24 to participate in the annual Student Lobby Day. Medvec, senior Alison Smith, and juniors Rashid Gilmore and Kubra Walter met with legislators and voiced concerns for the proposed state budget that would impact independent universities like Holy Family. The group met with State Representatives Gene DiGirolomo (R – Bucks) and Dennis O’Brien (R – Philadelphia), as well as Senator Mike Stack (D – Philadelphia). Business Professor Nominated for Who’s Who (May, 2009) Assistant Professor of Management-Marketing and Business Administration Andrew Liebman, MBA, was nominated for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who. Liebman serves as a consulting Board of Director member for National Personal Training Institute (NPTI) and his consulting efforts have led to the full granting of National Accreditation for NPTI’s certification exam. Chemistry Professor Receives Travel Award (May, 2009) Professor of Chemistry Kishore Bagga, PhD, MRSC, received an award for travel expenses from the Royal Society of Chemistry in the United Kingdom to attend the American Chemical Society’s National Spring meeting in Utah in March. Dr. Bagga and Research Intern Susan Daniel presented at the Conference. Adjunct Holds Poetry Reading at Rutgers (May, 2009) Adjunct Professor of English Daniel Picker, MA, was invited to read his poetry to the English Students’ Association at Rutgers University on March 25. Picker read his work to faculty, as well as graduate and undergraduate students. Picker has published more than 60 articles and reviews, and more than 60 poems in a wide variety of publications. Business Advisory Board Holds Inaugural Meeting (May, 2009) The newly-formed Holy Family University Business Executive Advisory Board held its inaugural meeting on Wednesday, March 25, in the Campus Center. Composed of 15 area business leaders–including alumni–the Board will advise the University’s School of Business Administration on curriculum, programs, and activities for students relevant to today’s business world. The Board will meet twice per year, with special committee meetings held as needed. Campus Ministry “Pushes the Envelope” (May, 2009) A contingent of Holy Family students, faculty, staff, and alumni, as well as area neighbors, participated in the national Pro Life: Pushing the Envelope campaign to send red envelopes to the White House to protest the Freedom of Choice Act. The University community sealed and stamped 500 red envelopes which were sent out on Tuesday as part of the Red Envelope Campaign, an interdenominational grass roots effort endorsed by Priests for Life. Holy Family’s effort was spearheaded by Campus Minister Father James MacNew, OSFS, Assistant Director of Cooperative Education Jim Acton, MA, Adjunct Professor Lou Giuliana, MA, Vice President for Student Services Sister Patrice Feher, CSFN, MA, and Circulation Librarian Shannon Brown. Rabbi Speaks on “Counseling in Combat” (May, 2009) Rabbi Jon Cutler discussed his experience as the only Jewish chaplain in western Iraq–and his role as the command chaplain for all faiths at Al Asad Air Base and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing–before a standing room only crowd on April 2 at Holy Family University–Newtown. Rabbi Cutler spent 13 months in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, supervising 40 chaplains and their assistants. The presentation was sponsored by the University’s Graduate Counseling Psychology program and focused on the challenges and highlights of counseling and spirituality issues in combat. International Day Showcases Different Cultures (May, 2009) The University held its International Day on Wednesday, March 11, in the Lower Lobby of the Campus Center. Sponsored by the Diversity Team, the program featured a multicultural dance performance and various table displays of different cultures. Lecture Caps off Green Week (May, 2009) The University celebrated Green Week the week of March 16, with different events spread throughout the week. Designed to raise awareness of the need for earth preservation and sustainability, Green Week was capped off with a lecture by City of Philadelphia Community Outreach Specialist Eva Burrell on March 19. Burrell’s lecture touched on recycling and green initiatives such as single stream recycling in the city of Philadelphia. March 13: The Associated Press news wire service published a news feature on Women’s Basketball Head Coach Mike McLaughlin which appeared in more than 50 news publications across the country. The story was frequently published under the headline “Philadelphia Coach is the Fastest to 400.” March 27: The Bucks County Courier Times published an article on the School of Business Administration’s new Business Executive Advisory Board. The story was headlined “Board to Advise Business School” and featured comments from advisory board members and Dean Jan Duggar, PhD. April 1: The Bucks County Courier Times published an article about the Graduate Counseling Psychology Department’s spring forum, featuring a special Pastoral Counseling lecture. Take Our Children to Work Day (May, 2009) Employees’ children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews will have the opportunity to learn about various careers, tour the university, participate in special activities, attend a luncheon, and earn a certificate for the day at Take Our Children to Work Day on Thursday, April 23. Daffodil Days Net $370 for Cancer (May, 2009) The University raised $370 during its week-long Daffodil Days campaign. The money will be sent to the American Cancer Society. Daffodil Days is one of the American Cancer Society's oldest and most beloved fundraising programs. For 36 years, Daffodil Days has empowered people to make a difference in the fight against cancer by raising funds and awareness to help beat the disease. Holy Family Welcomes New Employee (May, 2009) Mary Anne Collins recently joined the staff in the Academic Advising Center as a part-time Academic Services Assistant. Collins spent 35 years at the Department of Public Welfare, first as a clerk typist and eventually as an office manager. Harassment Prevention Training (May, 2009) “Harassment: What You Need to Know” – a two-hour training program for all new faculty, administrative, professional and technical staff members – will be offered on Thursday, April 16, from 9:30-11:30 am, and Monday, April 20, from 1:30-3:30 pm in Campus Center Room 115. The University provides annual training for all new faculty and staff to maintain a harassment-free campus. March Art Show Features “Spiritual Works” (April, 2009) Gerard DiFalco brings his “Spiritual Works” exhibit to the Art Gallery for the month of March. DiFalco’s show begins on Tuesday, March 3, and runs through Monday, March 30. Considered an emerging voice in the Sacred Art genre, DiFalco has exhibited his artwork in over 250 solo and juried-group shows. As a painter, he is best-known for his vivid palette and experiments with color-field theory. DiFalco is scheduled to present a lecture at the exhibit’s opening reception on Tuesday, March 10. The reception will run from 5-7 pm, with DiFalco’s lecture at 6 pm. International Day Celebration (April, 2009) Celebrate the growing diversity on campus on Wednesday, March 11 at International Day. Conferred by the Grant Professionals Certification Institute (GPCI), the credential recognizes proficiency in standards that include tenure in the profession, education, demonstrated achievement, and a commitment to service for public and private philanthropy. Libenson was one of 225 certified grant designers and managers who earned the Grant Professional Certified (GPC) title. Counseling Professor Delivers Keynote Address (April, 2009) Part-time Counseling faculty member Mary-Elaine Perry delivered the keynote address at the 35th Annual Delaware Valley Student Affairs Conference held at the ACE Center in February. Her address was entitled “Navigating Ever Changing Currents: My Compass is an I-Phone.” World Series Trophy Draws Big Crowd (April, 2009) The Commissioner’s Trophy, won by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2008 World Series, drew a crowd of nearly 1,000 to the basketball doubleheader against Philadelphia University on Tuesday, February 24. Fans were able to get a photo taken with the trophy by purchasing a ticket to the basketball games for $5. All proceeds from the evening went to the Father Joseph McCafferty Memorial Scholarship Fund benefitting Holy Family student-athletes. University Signs Transfer Agreement with Bucks County CC (April, 2009) Officials from Holy Family and Bucks County Community College in Newtown signed a Transfer Articulation Agreement on February 23 allowing BCCC students who meet certain criteria to transfer seamlessly into Holy Family University at junior status. Linksz, EdD, and other officials signed the transfer agreement during a brief ceremony at Holy Family University-Newtown. Newtown Kicks Off Women’s History Month (March, 2009) Holy Family University–Newtown hosts a kickoff to women’s history month in their cafeteria at 5:30 pm on Thursday, February 27. The event will include a lesson plan swap, resources and information for teachers on women’s history month, and a presentation by featured speaker State Representative Maugarite Quinn (R-Bucks). Director of Athletics Named to First Hall of Fame Class (March, 2009) Director of Athletics Sandra Michael, MA, is among a group of five people named to the University’s inaugural Athletics Hall of Fame class. Michael and four former student-athletes will be formally inducted in the Hall of Fame on Sunday, April 19. Michael has been the Director of Athletics since 1985 and oversees 15 NCAA Division II athletic teams. Among Michael’s many accomplishments and accolades, she is a two-time recipient of the NAIA Female Athletics Administrator of the Year Award, and in 2002 was honored as the Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Professor Publishes Article (March, 2009) Professor Emeritus Thomas Lombardi, PhD, had an article entitled “A Trek Up a Mountain” published in the National Catholic Register’s December 21 issue. Lombardi’s article focuses on the island of Patmos in Greece where St. John received and wrote the Apocalypse. Chemistry Professor Presents Work (March, 2009) Assistant Professor of Chemistry Kishore Bagga, PhD, MSRC, along with Susan Daniel, presented his work at the American Chemical Society Philadelphia Section’s Ninth Annual Graduate and Undergraduate Poster Day held at Temple University. Their presentation was titled Investigation of the Dyeing Potential of Synthetic and Non-synthetic Fabrics using Lawsone from Henna (Lawsonia inermis) in the Presence of Mordants and Modifiers. Career Center Director Presents Workshop (March, 2009) Career Center Director Don Brom, MS, presents “What Can You Do with a Major In...” on Thursday, February 19, at 12:15 pm in Campus Center Room 115. The workshop is the second of five planned for the spring semester. History Professor’s Book Available (March, 2009) Gender and Class in the Egyptian Women’s Movement 1925-1939, written by Associate Professor of History Cathlyn Mariscotti, PhD, and published by Syracuse University Press, is now available on amazon.com. Drawing upon published journal reports and newspaper articles, Mariscotti explores the tensions between upper-class harem women and lower-class women. She describes the way in which elite feminism created a concept of womanhood that fed into the nationalist cultural ideal, one that was not necessarily progressive for all Egyptian women. University Contingent Participates in March for Life (March, 2009) Approximately 35 members of the University community travelled to Washington, DC, on Thursday, January 22 to participate in the March for Life. Faculty, staff, and students were bused from the Northeast Philadelphia Campus to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington. After Father James MacNew, OSFS, MA, celebrated Mass at the Shrine, the group traveled to the steps of the Supreme Court, where they joined with other marchers from around the nation. This year’s turnout was the largest since Holy Family began traveling to Washington for the March for Life in 2007. Holy Family Celebrates National Day of Service (March, 2009) University faculty and staff members accompanied approximately 40 students to the Cardinal Bevilacqua Community Center in Philadelphia on Monday, January 19, to participate in the National Day of Service. The University contingent assisted in administering free health screenings, participated in a community cleanup, filled gift baskets, and created crafts for St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. On campus, a video of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech was shown in the Campus Center. Stevenson Lane Residence Topped Off (March, 2009) Nearly eight months to the day after Holy Family’s groundbreaking ceremony for the Stevenson Lane Residence, University constituents gathered to celebrate a topping off ceremony, as construction workers placed the tallest beam atop the building on Friday, January 9. Following a short ceremony featuring speeches from University President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, and representatives from TN Ward Company, Metro Architects, and Tantala Associates, LLC–all of whom have been involved in the construction–a forklift lifted the beam atop the residence. Faculty, staff, and students had the opportunity to sign the beam throughout the week leading up to the ceremony. Holy Family Goes Green (March, 2009) The Committee on the Environment has placed the following recycling receptacles around campus for our use: blue containers in the hallways and throughout the Northeast campus and Holy Family University–Woodhaven for plastics marked 1 and 2 (includes most beverage bottles); paper boxes in the computer rooms and library for paper and newsprint only; and gray trash containers at the Northeast Philadelphia campus and Woodhaven for food packaging and other supplies. At Holy Family University–Newtown, blue recycling bins are for single stream recyclables, aluminum, steel, tin cans, and paper. Social Security Workshop (March, 2009) The Human Resources/Payroll Department offers faculty and staff a brown bag lunch seminar on hot social security benefit topics on Friday, February 13, at 12:30 pm in Campus Center 115. Areas to be covered include the benefits and services provided by Social Security, the new Retirement Estimator, how to file for retirement online, and a question and answer session with a Social Security Administration representative. Emergency and Snow Closing Codes (March, 2009) In the event of an emergency or inclement weather, Holy Family’s school codes are: Northeast Philadelphia: 124-Day, 2124-Evening; Newtown 784-Day, 2784-Evening; and Woodhaven 144-Day, 2029-Evening. Christmas Rose Tradition Continues (February, 2009) Holy Family’s annual holiday tradition – Christmas Rose – will take place on Wednesday, December 10 at 5 pm in the Campus Center Gymnasium. Christmas Rose brings the University community together to celebrate a Eucharistic Liturgy, a buffet dinner and entertainment provided by the students. Serving a Breakfast of Champions (February, 2009) The Breakfast of Champions will take place on Thursday, December 11 at 10 pm in the Campus Center Commons. Professor’s Works Featured in Art Gallery (February, 2009) Adjunct Art Instructor David Bowman is the featured artist for the month of December. Bowman’s show, entitled “Caprices Bohemian” runs from Tuesday, December 2 through Sunday, January 4 in the University’s Art Gallery. Named after Sergei Rachmaninoff’s symphony title, Bowman’s art exhibit displays acrylics, watercolors, collages and rubberstamp use in dramatic variety. Professor Presents Paper on the Legacy of 1968 (February, 2009) Associate Professor of Political Science Stephen Medvec, PhD, presented “The Legacy of 1968: The Prague Spring, the Invasion of Czechoslovakia, and Poland’s March Events” at the Northeastern Political Science Association Conference on November 14. Medvec also served as Chair for the “International Relations in European Context” panel at the conference held in Boston. Chemistry Professor Presents at Cambridge, Receives Award (February, 2009) Assistant Professor of Chemistry Kishore Bagga, PhD, MSRC, was invited to speak by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) in Cambridge, United Kingdom in mid-November. Bagga presented “RSC USA Section-Methods of Social Networking Online.” Bagga, who is a member of the RSC USA Executive Committee, represented approximately 2800 members at the conference. Prior to his trip, Bagga received an award from the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students for his active work as a judge for chemistry oral and poster presentations. Assistant Registrar Receives Doctoral Degree (February, 2009) Assistant Registrar for Information Technology Liz Anderson, EdD, received her Doctoral Degree in Education: Leadership and Innovation from Wilmington University in Delaware. Anderson, who started the program in 2005, gave her dissertation on “Freshmen Retention: The Impact of a First Year Experience Program on Student Satisfaction and Academic Performance.” Spanish Instructor Gives Lecture (February, 2009) Spanish Lecturer Linda Koch Fader, PhD, presented a lecture based on her PhD dissertation on language change and attrition in the Judeo-Spanish of two Sephardic Philadelphia families at Beth Shalom congregation in Elkins Park on November 3. Fader is scheduled to present the same lecture in January at Ohev Shalom synagogue in Richboro, and in February at Keneseth Israel synagogue in Elkins Park. Adjunct Professor to Produce Vignettes (February, 2009) Communications Lecturer Rob Stoller, MBA has been hired by WHYY to produce vignettes for a television series entitled “Creative Campuses.” The vignettes will feature the work being done by Art Departments at area colleges and universities. Stoller already has shot footage at a number of local institutions and intends to produce a segment on Holy Family’s Art program when production resumes in 2009. The pieces are scheduled to begin airing late in the spring on WHYY’s digital channel. Important Holiday Break Dates (February, 2009) The University will close for the Christmas Break at the conclusion of business on Tuesday, December 23. Sister Francesca Honored for Catholic Leadership (February, 2009) President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, received the prestigious 2008 Award for Outstanding Catholic Leadership from the Catholic Leadership Institute during a dinner and ceremony on Friday, November 7 at The Drexelbrook in Drexel Hill. Sister Francesca was one of four who received the national award, joining Reverend Albert Cutie, Immaculee Ilibagiza, and Robert J. Sims as 2008 honorees. The Catholic Leadership Institute developed the Awards in 2000 to recognize people in the Catholic Church who have inspired and led others and who serve as role models for future Church and lay leaders. The awards recognize the accomplishments of women and men - lay, clergy, and religious - whose exemplary leadership in the family, the workplace, the community, and the Church has been inspired by their Catholic faith. Toys for Tots Campaign Collects More Than 200 Toys (February, 2009) Holy Family recently donated more than 220 toys to area children through the University’s Toys for Tots campaign. Sponsored by the Ed Connections Club, the campaign ran from late November 3 through December 5. Assistant Field Placement Director Lori Hill presented the University’s donation at a local Marine Corps barracks. Hill organized the campaign in conjunction with Associate Professor of Education Michael White, PhD. President Gives Keynote Speech (February, 2009) Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, was the keynote speaker at Lock Haven University’s Active Global Citizenship Conference held on November 17. S. Francesca, who also serves as Chair of the IAUP/UN Commission on Disarmament Education, Conflict Resolution and Peace, presented “Pathways of Global Citizenship.” S. Francesca spoke of the obligation universities have to teach students through good example, while offering them the opportunities to experience what it means to be a global citizen. She also challenged the students in the audience to be “the next generation of leaders.” Build-a-Library Project Donates More Than 1,500 Books (February, 2009) Holy Family student-athletes and Athletics Department staff collected more than 1,500 children’s books as part of the fall 2008 Build-a-Library community engagement initiative. It was the most successful event to date, surpassing last year’s total of 1,276 books. This year, the Athletic Department selected two elementary schools as project recipients. More than 1,200 books were donated to Philip H. Sheridan Elementary School, an inner-city public school in Philadelphia with a student population of 800, ranging from grades kindergarten through fourth grade. The remaining books were donated to Kids’ World Christian Education Center, a private school with approximately 40 students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Visionary Award Recipients Honored for $3 Million in Giving (February, 2009) Holy Family University honored five of its benefactors on November 14 at its annual Evening of Donor Appreciation, held in the Perzel Education & Technology Center (ETC). The W.W. Smith Charitable Trust, the Connelly Foundation, and an anonymous donor became the first three recipients of the Visionary Society Award, given to individuals, corporations, foundations & organizations whose cumulative giving to Holy Family equals $1,000,000 or more. Sister Francesca Honored for Catholic Leadership (December, 2008) President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, will receive the prestigious 2008 Award for Outstanding Catholic Leadership from the Catholic Leadership Institute during a dinner and ceremony on Friday, November 7 at Drexelbrook in Drexel Hill. University to Hold Liturgy of Remembrance for Father Fahy (December, 2008) The University will hold a Liturgy of Remembrance to honor the life and work of Reverend C. Thomas Fahy, OSB, MA, on Wednesday, November 12 at 12:30 pm in the Campus Center. Fahy, an Assistant Professor in the School of Arts and Sciences, passed away in a tragic accident Monday, October 6. Senior Thesis Exposition Opens in Art Gallery (December, 2008) The Senior Thesis Exposition–the third art show of the academic year – will run in the Holy Family University Art Gallery from Tuesday, November 18 through Sunday, November 30. Student Dennis Ondrejka will exhibit his paintings, prints, and sculpture with a sports theme. There will be an opening reception from 5-8 pm on Monday, November 24. The University Art Gallery is located on the Lower Level of the Perzel Education and Technology Center on the University’s Northeast Philadelphia Campus. The event is free and open to the public. Visiting Guizhou Professor to Present Final Two Seminars (December, 2008) Guizhou University Professor of English Translation Yin Patricia Pan will conduct two seminars for Holy Family students in November. Pan will present “Names and Interpersonal Relationships” on November 10, and “Chinese Food, Chopsticks, and Tea Drinking” on November 24. Both seminars will take place from 12:30-1:10 pm in Campus Center Room 115. Pan arrived on campus on July 11 and has been sharing her unique perspective with Holy Family students, faculty, and staff through presentations, lectures, and activities during the fall semester. English Instructor Presents at Conference (December, 2008) English Instructor Janet-Lynn Garrabrant, CPCU, CLU, MA, presented “Student Excuses” at the Two-Year College English Association (TYCA) Conference in October. Garrabrant’s presentation dealt with how teachers negotiate the terrain between educational standards and students’ personal challenges. Adjunct Presents to Support Group (December, 2008) English Lecturer Victoria Lombardi, MA, presented “Self Exploration through Journaling” to the lymphedema support group at Fox Chase Cancer Center on Wednesday, October 22. Lombardi read from her personal journal entries. University Receives Grant for Testing Coordinator (December, 2008) Holy Family has secured a grant for more than $20,000 from TD North for a new position in the School of Nursing. The University will appoint a Testing Coordinator who will provide each senior-level student with the opportunity to receive two hours per week of test taking preparation. The coordinator will be responsible for creating customized questions that mimic those on the Health Education System Incorporated (HESI) exit exam. Cooperative Education Director Attends Meeting (December, 2008) Director of Cooperative Education Sister Frances Veitz, CSFN, EdD, attended a meeting sponsored by the T. Howard Foundation on Wednesday, October 29. Co-op and Internship Directors, as well as Careers Services Representatives from Temple, LaSalle, St. Joseph’s and the University of Pennsylvania were present. The T. Howard Foundation provides paid internships to minorities and women attending accredited, four-year colleges in the US. The meeting dealt with the placement of interns with major media companies. Nursing Adjunct Named Administrator of the Year (December, 2008) Nursing Lecturer Kathleen Maguire, MSN, was named the 2008 Pennsylvania Association of School Nurses Administrator of the Year. Maguire currently attends the Doctor of Nursing program at Jefferson University College of Nursing. Director of Admissions Presents Workshop (December, 2008) Director of Graduate Admissions Margaret Bacheler, MBA, presented a workshop on office management skills at the Bucks County Day for All Women on Saturday, November 1 at Bucks County Community College. Professors Attend Convention (December, 2008) Associate Professor of Political Science Stephen Medvec, PhD, and Assistant Professor of Sociology Jenai Murtha, PhD, attended the Triennial Convention of Pi Gamma Mu, the International Honor Society in Social Sciences, in Atlanta, Georgia, from October 23-25. They were joined by senior Sara Morgan Powers, who presented a poster exhibit and lecture on her joint research with Dr. Murtha on widows and dating-or-not-dating aspects of social life after the death of spouses. The keynote speaker from the National Commission for Cooperative Education discussed “Global Trends in Experiential Education.” Extended Learning Participates in Charity Walk (December, 2008) The Division of Extended Learning (DEL) participated in the Walk to Cure Diabetes on Sunday, October 26. The walk benefitted the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and took place at Bucks County Community College. The team of walkers from Holy Family consisted of administrators, facilitators, alumni, and students, as well as their family and friends. Energy Summit Held on Campus (December, 2008) Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. was the featured speaker at the Philadelphia Energy Summit, hosted by Holy Family University, on Saturday, November 1, 2008. Sponsored by CBS Radio Philadelphia, the Summit ran from 9 am-2 pm. Kennedy spoke at 12:30 pm in the Perzel Education and Technology Center (ETC) Auditorium. Kennedy called for the nation’s power grid to be upgraded to provide all states access to solar power and for the country to realize that electric vehicles - not hybrids - are the future. The Summit, which included exhibits, panel discussions, and guest speakers, was broadcast on The Big Talker 1210, WPHT-AM. Former Chair of the White House Counsel on Environmental Quality Kathleen McGinty also addressed those in attendance. Newtown Events Draw a Crowd (December, 2008) Author Theresa Golding addressed a throng of students, faculty and staff at Newtown on Thursday, October 23. Golding gave book talks on teens, tweens, and grades 4-8. The following week, “What’s New in Children’s Literature” was presented by Ellen Mager, Manager of the Secret Garden Bookstore. Lecture Explores Fairmount Park Battle (December, 2008) Holy Family and Glen Foerd on the Delaware, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, sponsored a lecture entitled “Frederick Law Olmsted Battles the Fairmount Park Commission” on Friday, October 24 in the Perzel Education and Technology Center. The well-attended lecture was presented by Dr. Elizabeth Milroy, and explored the Commission’s decision not to hire the famous landscape architect to improve Philadelphia’s new park. Library Holds Annual Halloween Party (December, 2008) The Library hosted its annual Halloween party on Friday, October 31, at noon.
