Construction Update
(August, 2008)
Construction on the Stevenson Street Residence is underway. Stevenson Street is closed east of the Campus Center, and the road will be inaccessible while construction takes place.
The parking spaces on Stevenson Street have been eliminated. Beginning August 11, all technical staff must park in the University’s space at St. Katherine’s Church on Frankford Avenue. The University has reserved 65 parking spaces in the St. Katherine’s lot.
Vice President Moves On

Vice President for Planning & Special Projects Moya Dittmeier, EdD, has been appointed the Executive Director of the Conference for Mercy Higher Education (CMHE). She will assume her role at the CMHE office in Silver Spring, MD in July. CMHE provides support for the Mercy-affiliated colleges and universities by providing a formal network of collaboration, branding and faculty exchange, and to support the religious congregation of the Sisters of Mercy in its responsibility for stewarding mission in a Catholic context.
Chemistry Professor Presents Research

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Kishore Bagga, PhD, MRSC, presented research findings at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Meeting (MARM) of the American Chemical Society at Queensborough Community College from May 17-20. Bagga worked on the project with his research student Sam Ganta.
Woodhaven Facilitator Named County Solicitor

Woodhaven Facilitator Glenn Hains, Esq, was recently appointed County Solicitor for Bucks County. Hains was selected for the position at the County’s commissioner’s meeting in April. A former Mayor of Newtown Borough, Hains has been an adjunct in the MBA program since 2007.
Admissions Director Serves on Committee

Director of Undergraduate Admissions Lauren Campbell, MA, served on a scholarship committee for children of employees at Agusta Aerospace Corporation, which is located on Red Lion Road next to the Northeast Philadelphia Airport. Campbell and her fellow committee members awarded five scholarships to children of the company’s employees.
Faculty to Present Research Findings

Adjunct Professor of English Jean Kohl, EdD and Arts & Communications Chair Janice Showler, PhD, will present “Through the Looking Glass: Bridging the Gap between Secondary Schools and College” at Pi Lambda Theta’s Great Lakes Region II Professional Development and Leadership Conference held in Toledo, Ohio from June 13-14. The presentation will provide their culminating analysis of post-tests, teacher, and student surveys from their year-long writing study.
Assistant Director of Admissions Receives Graduate Degree

Assistant Director of Admissions Chris Veitz, MEd, completed his Masters Degree in Education from Holy Family and walked in the graduate ceremony at the Kimmel Center on May 23. Veitz, who started working towards the degree in 2002, was accompanied by his wife Laura, who also completed her graduate degree in education with a reading specialist certification.
Co-Op Department Partners with Johnson & Johnson

The Cooperative Education Department began a partnership with Johnson & Johnson at the company’s Fort Washington location, sending two students to full-time co-ops running from June-December. The co-ops are a part of the University’s alternating program, which allows students to work full-time and earn six credits in their major field, while taking courses part-time in the evening. The partnership is another benefit of the department’s recent “Chapter of the Year” award as Johnson & Johnson was a major sponsor of the Convention where Holy Family received the award.
Marketing & Communications Earns Awards

The Hermes Creative Awards honored the Marketing & Communications Department with three awards. The Department earned two awards in the Advertising/Television Spot category (national) – Gold for the 30-second “athletics” TV commercial, and Platinum for the 30-second “academics” TV commercial. Marketing & Communications also earned a Gold Award in the Video/Other category for the “I Give Because” President’s report video.
School of Education Partnership Recognized

The School District of Philadelphia awarded the University and the Holmes School a trophy and school banner for recognition as a Best Practices Effective Community Partnership at an event on May 15.
University Breaks Ground for Stevenson Street Residence

Groundbreaking for the newest building on the Northeast Philadelphia campus took place on May 6, as shovels went into gravel on the site of the existing softball field. That is the site of the new Stevenson Residence, located on Stevenson Street, just below the Campus Center. The Residence will offer suite-style living with design and amenities in line with what students expect in contemporary campus housing. Each unit will have two bedrooms, a bathroom with separate shower and sink facilities, and a small living room. Kitchenette and laundry rooms are provided on each floor. A quiet study room will sit on one wing of each floor. On the opposite wing, a student lounge will offer a panoramic view of the campus and beyond.
Blue Mass Celebrated

Holy Family prayed for the protection of police, fire, and emergency personnel during its second annual Blue Mass on May 16 in the Campus Center Lower Lobby. Campus Minister Reverend James MacNew, OSFS, celebrated the Mass, with Assistant Professor of Religious Studies Reverend Mark Hunt, STL as his concelebrant. The Philadelphia Police Department Color Guard was on hand, as were local police officers and firemen.
Gift Carries Trust over One Million Mark

Holy Family received a $51,000 grant from the W.W. Smith Charitable Trust, bringing the Trust’s total giving to more than $1,000,000 in student scholarships over the past 27 years. W.W. Smith Scholarship recipients are chosen for their potential to succeed despite many challenges, financial and otherwise. Twenty-five Holy Family students will reap the benefits of this year’s grant.
Retiring Professors Honored at Commencement

Professor of Modern Languages Peter Frey, EdD, and Professor of Humanities Lisa Woodside, PhD, were recognized for their service to the University at Commencement. Frey devoted 36 years of distinguished service to Holy Family, while Woodside spent 25 years as both an academic administrator and member of the faculty.

The 60-second clip featured footage of S. Francesca in her office and on the Northeast Philadelphia campus.

May 8: WPHT AM 1210 “The Big Talker” featured an interview with Director of Campus Safety Joe McBride during a live broadcast of the Dom Giordano show. McBride spoke about the University’s May 16 Blue Mass.
May 11: KYW AM News radio 1060 aired a 45-second story on the groundbreaking ceremony for the Stevenson Street Residence. The clip included an interview with President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, and aired intermittently throughout the day.
May 16: CBS 3 (KYW) Channel 6 (WPVI), and Channel 29 (Fox) covered the Second Annual Blue Mass and aired footage of the service during their respective evening news broadcasts. Fox 29 previewed the Mass on their morning show “Good Day Philadelphia.”

Morey’s Pier Discount

University employees can take advantage of discount tickets to Morey’s Pier in North Wildwood, New Jersey. There are four discounts available – the Good Any Day E-Ticket Program, which provides a 29 percent discount off the ticket prices, and the Splash and Ride Combo, which includes all day and evening admission to all three of Morey’s amusement piers and all day admission to their two water parks. The Combo is $39 for persons over 48” tall, and $30 for those under 48”. Tiger and Cub Café Summer Hours

The Tiger Café will be open from 8 am – 2 pm effective May 5. The Tiger Café will close for the summer on Monday, June 2. The Cub Café will close for the summer on Saturday, May 2. Both will re-open in August.

The University community is invited to an information meeting on Tuesday, May 13 at 11 am in the Perzel Education & Technology Center (ETC). Following the meeting, the University’s Annual Picnic will be held from 12:30-2:30 pm in the Campus Center Dining Commons. Offices will re-open at 2:30 for the remainder of the day and during normal evening hours.
Commencement Transportation

Administrators, full-time faculty, and professional staff who plan to ride a motor coach from the Northeast Campus to the Kimmel Center on Commencement Day should be at the Campus Center by 7:30 am on Friday, May 23. Three chartered buses will leave at 7:45 am. Those with academic attire will be able to carry their attire onto the buses or place their cap, gown and hood in the storage bins of the buses. Upon arrival at the Kimmel Center, a continental breakfast will be available in the Wachovia Founders Club and Rendell Room. This is the same location where the faculty will robe and line up for the morning processional. Assistant Vice President for Finance, Budget and Institutional Research Michael Van Thuyne, MBA, will coordinate the queue for the faculty processional. The graduate ceremony will take place at 9:30 am, followed by the undergraduate ceremony at 12:30 pm. The ceremony will be simulcast to the Perzel Education & Technology Center (ETC) for those unable to attend at the Kimmel Center. Interim Dean for the School of Business Administration James Higgins, MBA, attended a conference at DeSales University on April 10, 2008. The conference sponsored by Temple University’s Center for International Business Education and Research and DeSales University‘s Gambet Center for Innovation and Global Competitiveness was entitled “Thought Leadership for Education and Business: Co-constructing New Organizational Models for Innovation and Global Competitiveness.”
Assistant Vice President Attends Annual Forum

Assistant Vice President for Human Resources Renee Rosenfeld, MBA, CEBS attended the Penjerdel Employee Benefits and Compensation Association’s (PEBA) Annual Forum, entitled “The New Workforce,” on April 10 at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. She attended a legislative update and sessions on creating wellness at work, as well as breaking down language barriers and other communication issues.

School of Education Professors Helen Hoffner, EdD, Kathleen Quinn, PhD, and Eileen Baker, MEd, published an article entitled “Lights, Cameras, Pencils! Using Descriptive Video to Enhance Writing” in The Reading Teacher, the journal of the International Reading Association. The article introduces educators to visual description, a new form of technology. The trio of authors also published a related lesson plan on the Read Write Think Web site at www.readwritethink.org.

Nursing Professor Contributes to Reference Manual

Professor of Nursing Kathyrn Van Dyke Hayes, PhD, RN, contributed to the newly published Sparks and Taylor’s Nursing Diagnosis Reference Manual 7th Edition. The manual was published by Wolters Kluwer Health/Lippincott Williams and Wilkins.

Professor’s Poems Published

Adjunct Professor of English Daniel Picker, MA, had his third poem accepted for publication in Rune: MIT Journal of Arts & Letters, which is published every spring. Picker’s previous poems were entitled “Steep Stony Road” and “Above a Station of the BART.” Picker also contributed two of his poems to the third annual Haddonfield Speaks Poetry Celebration, and both appeared in the Haddonfield Speaks Anthology.
SEPCHE Modern Language Forum Held on Campus

The Arts and Communications Department hosted SEPCHE’s Fourth Annual Language and Culture Symposium on Saturday, April 12, in the Perzel Education and Technology Center (ETC). Terri Morrison, author of Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands: How to Do Business in Sixty Countries, was the keynote speaker. Ninety-four students representing SEPCHE schools participated by performing, presenting research papers, and sharing experiences from their Study Abroad or Service Learning Abroad programs.
Former Soap Producer Speaks on Life of “Riches to Rags”

Gerry Straub, founder of the San Damiano Foundation, brought his message of consciousness deepening to Holy Family on Wednesday, April 23. Addressing a crowd of faculty, staff, students, and friends of the University, Straub detailed his journey from “riches to rags.”
Straub, a former television executive with a strong resume of Hollywood hits including time spent as the producer of General Hospital, has produced several documentaries portraying the reality of the poor and homeless. One of his films – “Room at the Inn” – focuses on the work being done at the St. Francis Inn in the Frankford section of Philadelphia. The event was sponsored by the University, in conjunction with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Religion Publishers.
Scholarship Ball Raises More Than $400,000

In excess of 350 people attended Holy Family’s Scholarship Ball 2008 on Saturday, April 19 in the Crystal Tea Room of the Wanamaker Building. The University raised approximately $404,000, with proceeds from the evening benefitting student financial aid. University President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, presented the Corporate Leadership Award to Joseph W. “Chip” Marshall, III, President and Chief Executive Officer of Temple University Health System.

Dawn Bradby joined the academic advising center on April 15 as a part-time Academic Services Assistant. Bradby is self-employed as a medical transcriptionist, and she holds a bachelor of science in Exercise and Sports Science from Penn State University.

Art Show Explores Alzheimer’s

Throughout April, the Art Gallery will present an exhibit, entitled “Look into My Eyes and Share My Memories: The Faces of Alzheimer’s Disease” by Bonnie Lee Strunk. The award-winning exhibit features 19 black-and-white photos of individuals who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. An opening reception and artist talk is scheduled for Tuesday, April 8, from 5-7 pm. University Hosts SEPCHE Language & Culture Symposium

Dance the Night Away at the Scholarship Ball

The 2008 Scholarship Ball will take place on Saturday, April 19, in the Crystal Tea Room of the Wanamaker Building. Professor of Political Science Presents Paper

Associate Professor of Political Science Stephen Medvec, PhD, presented a paper entitled “The Prague Spring, the Invasion of Czechoslovakia, and Poland’s March Events” at The Legacy of 1968 Conference held at Chestnut Hill College on Friday, April 4. Medvec was one of more than 50 presenters to discuss various aspects of that revolutionary time period in American history.
Co-Op Honor Society Named Chapter of the Year

The Mu Chapter of Kappa Theta Epsilon – the national co-op honor society – won the Chapter of the Year Award at the National Kappa Theta Epsilon convention held at Drexel University in March. Holy Family’s chapter, under the direction of Director of Cooperative Education Sister Frances Veitz, CSFN, EdD, is the smallest school of the 19 existing chapters.

Marketing & Communications Collects More Awards

The Marketing & Communications Department recently received four Telly Awards for their work on the “I Give Because” President’s Report. The Telly Awards is a national competition that honors the finest video and film productions. Holy Family’s production earned bronze – the second-highest honor – in the following Non-Broadcast Production categories: Charitable/Not-for-profit, Fund Raising, Videography/Cinematography, and Art Direction.

Assistant to the Director of Cooperative Education Jim Acton, MA, attended the National Conference of the Cooperative Education & Internship Association (CEIA) in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, March 9-11. Creativity Conference Draws A Crowd

Associate Professor of Psychology Lynn DellaPietra, PhD, and the School of Arts & Sciences hosted a day-long conference entitled “Perspectives on Creativity” on Saturday, March 29. Over fifty people attended the event, which was open to the public and featured a keynote address from Boston College Professor of Psychology Ellen Winner, PhD. Professor of Psychology Arthur Grugan, PhD, was one of the featured presenters. Some topics covered included “Creativity and Aging,” “Creativity, Music, and Therapy,” and “The Healing Power of Creative Expression.”
Lecture Explores Origin of Mudslinging

Over 100 people attended a lecture on Friday, March 28, about the political tactics that led to the election of President Grover Cleveland in 1884. Presented by University of Kentucky Professor of History Mark Summers, PhD, the lecture focused on the election of 1884, considered one of the most interesting and distasteful in American history. The lecture, entitled “Rum, Romanism, & Rebellion: The Presidential Election of 1884,” was the second in a series on Gilded Age politics. The lecture series is a collaboration between the University and Glen Foerd on the Delaware.
Autism Exhibit & Conference

Youth Advocate Programs Inc. held a one-day art exhibit and conference entitled “Autism in Action” on Saturday, April 5 in the Perzel Education & Technology Center (ETC). The exhibit featured artwork created by children and adults with autism. The day included a morning presentation from House Speaker Dennis O’Brien, as well as workshops on fine arts and autism.
International Day Showcases Different Cultures

The University held its International Day on Wednesday, March 26 in the Lower Lobby of the Campus Center. Sponsored by the Diversity Team and Fusion – the student multicultural club, the program featured three cultural dance performances (Polish, Indian, Salsa/Disco) and various table displays of different cultures, including those of Ecuador, Brazil and the Phillipines.

Take Your Children to Work Day

Employees’ children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews will have the opportunity to learn about various careers, tour the university, participate in special activities, attend a luncheon, and earn a certificate for the day at Take Your Children to Work Day on Thursday, April 24. Daffodil Days Net More Than $350 for Cancer

The University raised $373 during its week-long Daffodil Days campaign. The money will be sent to the American Cancer Society. Daffodil Days is one of the American Cancer Society's oldest and most beloved fundraising programs. For 35 years, Daffodil Days has empowered people to make a difference in the fight against cancer by raising funds and awareness to help beat the disease.
Holy Family Welcomes New Employees

Bill McDowell came aboard the staff in the IT Division on March 10 as a User Support Specialist. McDowell comes to the University from Jones of New York, where he worked as a POS Support Analyst. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in Management Information Systems from Philadelphia University.
Charlie Shovlin joined the staff in Public Safety as a Pool Security Officer effective March 11. Shovlin holds a bachelor of science in Criminal Justice from Temple University and is a member of the Pennsylvania Prison Warden’s Association, the American Correctional Association, the American Jail Association, and the League of the Sacred Heart for Catholic Police, Firemen, and Prison Guards.
Paul McKenna joined the University as a Pool Public Safety Officer on March 28. McKenna was a detective with the Philadelphia Police Department for 30 years.
Luck of the Irish Presentation

The Art Gallery is proud to present the March 2008 exhibit, entitled “Icons” by Susan Kelly von Medicus. Glen Foerd Lecture Series

Holy Family, in collaboration with Glen Foerd on the Delaware, will host the second lecture in a series on the Gilded Age on Friday, March 28 at 7 pm in the Perzel Education and Technology Center (ETC). The lecture, presented by University of Kentucky history professor Mark Summers, PhD, is entitled “Rum, Romanism, & Rebellion: The Presidential Election of 1884” and focuses on the mudslinging between the two candidates. The lecture series, partially funded by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, is free and open to the public.
Creativity Conference

A “Perspectives on Creativity” conference is scheduled for Saturday, March 29 in the Perzel Education and Technology Center (ETC). The conference will begin with a complimentary continental breakfast and registration at 8:30 am, followed by the keynote address. Autism Exhibit and Workshops On Campus

“Autism Arts in Action,” a one-day exhibit with accompanying workshops and presentations, will offer a unique perspective on the creative and entrepreneurial side of autism on Saturday, April 5. The University is co-sponsoring the event with Youth Advocate Programs. The art exhibit will be on display in the first floor lobby of the Perzel Education and Technology Center (ETC), with performing arts taking place in the classrooms on the first floor of the ETC, as well as the Auditorium. Sister Francesca Named Chamber of Commerce Chair

University President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, was unanimously named Chairperson of the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce (GNPCC) at a meeting held on campus in February. The GNPCC brings small and large businesses together to network, develop, and improve business relationships. S. Francesca will serve a two-year term as Chairperson, replacing outgoing Chair Edward McBride, County Affairs Manager for PECO Energy.

The Admissions Marketing Report selected Holy Family’s total ad campaign for its highest honor – the gold award. Nursing Professor Co-Authors Textbook; Appointed Committee Chair

Professor of Nursing Kathryn Van Dyke Hayes, PhD, RN, has co-authored five chapters in the Sixth Edition of Craven and Hirnle’s Fundamentals of Nursing: Human Health and Function, published by Lippincott, Williams, and Wilkins. Hayes played a key role in the development of the nursing process content in the textbook. In an unrelated development, she was recently appointed Chair of the Clinical Practice Committee of American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Nurses (AASCIN) and continues to serve as a member of the Research Committee of the Neuroscience Nursing Foundation (NNF).
Spanish Instructor Presents Dissertation

Spanish Instructor Adriana Merino, MA, recently presented her dissertation, entitled “Enhancing Second Language Pragmatic Competence: An Oral Discourse Processing Model” before four scholars in Madrid, Spain. Merino is scheduled to defend the dissertation this summer. In her presentation, Merino proposes a Processing Model she calls C.A.P. - pragmatic oral comprehension. This model, along with her “Theory of Embracing”, seeks to enhance second-language acquisition as well as achieve native-like fluency and comprehension.

Alumnus Speaks on Volunteer Work in New Orleans

Will Toffling ’07 captivated a roomful of faculty, staff, and students on Tuesday, February 26, as he recounted the first half of his year-long commitment to help rebuild New Orleans as a part of AmeriCorps. Following Commencement, Toffling volunteered to help in New Orleans after traveling there during the Spring Break of his senior year as part of the University-sponsored Habitat for Humanity program. Toffling spent the past few months working in Musician’s Village and St. Bernard’s Parish. His commitment to AmeriCorps runs through June. The University has committed to two volunteer programs for this year’s Spring Break – Habitat for Humanity in Miami, Florida, and an Inter Faith Housing project in Bucks County.

Suicide Prevention Seminar Scheduled

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is a suicide prevention strategy for non-mental health professionals and others in professions not related to psychology to recognize and appropriately respond to suicidal persons. The program is ideal for faculty and staff who are typically the first student contact in a crisis. Charter Day Celebrations

Holy Family celebrated Charter Day on the Northeast Philadelphia Campus on Monday, February 11, and will celebrate at Holy Family University - Newtown on Wednesday, February 13. On Monday, was held in the Campus Center Lower Lobby at 12:30 pm and was followed by an award ceremony. Staff members who have served for five, 10, 15, 20, and 25 years were honored at the ceremony. At the conclusion of the award ceremony, there was a cake cutting in the Dining Commons. On Wednesday, Newtown will celebrate Mass at 9 am to kick off Charter Day. At noon, there will be a luncheon celebration in the Newtown Commons. From 4-7 pm, Newtown will have its Evening Social in the Lobby.
We Love Writing Workshop

Forum on Career Paths for Counselors

Professor Presents History of Montana to Grade School Students

Associate Professor of Political Science Stephen Medvec, PhD, lectured on the history of his home state of Montana to a group of fifth-grade students at St. Joseph’s/St.Robert’s School in Warrington, PA on January 28. Medvec’s lecture covered the state’s historical contributions in a number of subjects, including the Lewis & Clark expedition and the Indian Wars. He also addressed the geography of the Rocky Mountains, the number of Tyrannosaurus rex found in the state since 1900, and the state’s famous politicians.

Phone Cards for the Troops

Director of the Counseling Psychology Graduate Program George Colton, EdD, is assisting with a Phone Cards for the Troops program in conjunction with Navy Commander Rabbi Jon Culter. Culter has been deployed to Iraq to minister to Marines in Al Asad in the Al Anbar region. Marines will use the phone cards to call friends and family in the US. Contingent Marches for Life in DC

The University conducted its second annual trip to the March for Life rally in Washington, DC on Tuesday, January 22. Students from Temple University and Nazareth Academy joined Holy Family’s group on the trip. The University contingent traveled by bus to the Immaculate Conception Shrine in DC, and then took the Metro to the Rally. March for Life is an annual pro-life rally, held on the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s 1973 decision in the Roe v. Wade case.
University Participates in National Day of Service

Approximately 25 members of the Holy Family community traveled to Special People in the Northeast (SPIN) on Monday, January 21 to take part in the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service. Students, faculty, and staff spent the day fixing up a playground area. SPIN's Frankford center houses after-school programs, early intervention, and other programs for children and adults with special needs.
Art Show, Discussion Shed Light on Enslavement

The School of Arts and Sciences held events on successive days in early February regarding enslavement, covering 400 years in less than 24 hours. On Tuesday, February 5, Professor of History Mary Carroll Johansen, PhD, gave a historical overview of the Middle Passage – the second leg of the three-step transportation of slaves from Africa to the Americas - at the opening reception of the “Haiku Middle Passage Commemorative Traveling Exhibit.” The free exhibit opened in Holy Family University’s Art Gallery on Wednesday, January 23 and runs through February 27. Associate Professor of Art Pamela Flynn, MFA, is one of the artists whose work is on display.

Nursing Lab Receives Additional Grant

At the end of January, the State of Pennsylvania announced an investment of $1.8 million to expand nurse education opportunities and increase the number of nurses in Pennsylvania. As part of this initiative, Holy Family received a grant in excess of $185,000 for the completion of the Nursing Simulation Lab in the Nursing Education Building. It was the largest equipment grant awarded by the State to any of the recipients. The grant will be used to equip the Simulation Lab with three additional METI-Men, and allow the University’s students to work with simulated patients of all ages.

University Roasts Sister Francesca

Over 300 constituents of Holy Family University gathered for a Silver Anniverary Dinner and Roast honoring President Sister Francesca Onley, CSFN, PhD, on Thursday, November 29 at Belle Voir Manor in Bensalem. The Roast capped a year of events celebrating S. Francesca’s 25th anniversary as President. The Dinner and Roast helped the University meet its goal of endowing a scholarship in Sister Francesca’s name for a first-time, full-time student.
Science Darkroom Dedicated

Holy Family University dedicated its new Science Darkroom on Monday, December 3. Located on the lower level of Holy Family Hall, the Darkroom joined the recently renovated Communications Suite as the newest facilities available to the University’s students. In addition to normal photographic procedures, the darkroom allows X-ray film to be developed using an automated film processor. Chair for Natural Science and Math Robert E. Cordero, PhD and Assistant Professor of Biology Stanley K. Mauldin, PhD were awarded a strategic planning grant to make the Darkroom possible. Photographic equipment was donated by Edward Leboy.
Sudanese Professor Speaks to Holy Family Community

Suad Badri, PhD, Senior Lecturer at the Ahfad University for Women in Sudan, Africa, spoke to a full house at Holy Family on Thursday, December 6. Badri gave background information on Ahfad University and provided some insight into the history of the conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan.
Toys for Tots Program a Success

Holy Family recently donated 182 toys to area children through the University’s Toys for Tots campaign. Sponsored by the Ed Connections Club, the campaign ran from late October through December 18. Assistant Field Placement Director Lori Hill presented the University’s donation at a local Marine Corps barracks. Hill organized the campaign in conjunction with Associate Professor of Education Michael White, PhD. Students from the University’s Ed Connections Club, as well as those in White’s Freshman Experience group, ran several events to promote the campaign, including a bake sale and a Toys for Tots sticker sale.

Spanish Professor Earns Doctorate

Professor of Art Michelle Rattigan, MA, ATR-BC, NCC, LPC received the 2007 Active Artist Award from the Delaware Valley Art Therapy Association (DVATA). Rattigan will be co-presenting “All Bottled Up: An Exploration into a Case Shared by Two Art Therapists and the Power of the Art Product as Transitional Object” at the DVATA’s annual Conference at Drexel University on January 26.
Development Director Receives Re-Certification

Director of Development Michael Foley, CFRE was re-certified as a Certified Fund Raising Executive by the CFRE International & Association of Fundraising Professionals. Foley was originally certified in 2001. The re-certification serves as an impartial, third-party endorsement of an individual’s knowledge and experience against international standards in philanthropy.

March for Life Rally

The University’s second annual trip to the March for Life Rally in Washington, DC will take place on Tuesday, January 22. The University has chartered two buses and has room for nearly 100 people to take the trip. The plan is to bus to the Immaculate Conception Shrine in Washington, walk to the Metro station to take the Metro to the Rally. The buses will depart from the Campus Center parking lot at 6 am. The group is scheduled to return around 9 pm. Volunteers Sought for Day of Service

The Holy Family contingent of faculty, staff, and students will travel to Special People in the Northeast (SPIN) to work with the organization from 8:15 am – 1 pm. Haiku-Themed Art Show Opens in Late January

The fourth show of the school year – entitled “Haiku Middle Passage Commemorative Traveling Exhibit” – opens in the Holy Family University Art Gallery on Wednesday, January 23. A haiku poet will speak at the opening reception on Tuesday, February 5 from 12:30-2 pm. The free exhibit runs through Wednesday, February 27.

The Business Office welcomes Charlotte Cooke as a Loan Collection Specialist. Since 2004, Cook has worked as Accounting/Payroll Coordinator for Holt's Cigar Company in Philadelphia. Prior to that, she worked as a Credit/Collections Coordinator for Airline Hydraulics Corporation in Bensalem. Cook has taken business courses at LaSalle University and has studied medical terminology at the Community College of Philadelphia.

Associate Professor of Nursing Publishes Articles on Trip to China

Associate Professor of Nursing Susan M. Miovech, PhD, RNC, had three articles published in ADVANCE for Nurses. Miovech traveled to the People’s Republic of China in June as part of a People to People Ambassador Program. Her three-part series of articles was entitled “A Land of Contrasts,” “Nursing in China: Yin & Yang of Healthcare,” and “China Growing.” The pieces ran in successive publications dated September 17, October 1, and October 15, 2007.
Education Professor Presents at National Conference

Professor of Education Phyllis Anthony, EdD, co-presented a session entitled “Leading Students to the Future” at the national conference of the American Association of School Librarians in Reno, Nevada on October 27. Anthony’s session focused on the negotiation that must take place between the classroom teacher and the school library media specialist before, during, and after the curriculum development process in order for information literacy instruction to take place in a learning environment. Anthony co-presented with Pamela Chesky from the Center for International Scholarship in School Libraries.

Women’s Tennis Team Captures CACC Championship

Holy Family’s women’s tennis team won its second consecutive Central Athletic Collegiate Conference (CACC) championship by defeating second-seeded Philadelphia University 5-0 in the CACC Finals on October 13. The top-seeded Tigers (12-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead by taking all three doubles matches. Quena Borres and Shakir Willett defeated their opponents in the first flight. The second flight duo of Liana Lui and Lauren Neill won their match, 8-2. Melanie Pulsinelli and Ashley Berge were 8-5 winners of their third flight match. Pulsinelli and Berge gave Holy Family the title by winning their respective singles matches in straight sets. Pulsinelli took her fifth flight match, 6-0, 6-3. Berge was victorious in the sixth flight, 6-2, 6-2. With the victory, Holy Family has secured a spot in the 2007-08 NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament.
Faculty Senate Scholarship Applications Now Being Accepted

Applications are now being accepted from eligible students for the Faculty Senate Scholarship. Students must have completed at least 24 credits at Holy Family by the end of the Fall 2007 semester and must receive financial assistance covering no more than 25% of the cost of their tuition, aside from unsubsidized Stafford Loans, PLUS loans, or alternative loans. Ed Connections Participates in Toys for Tots Campaign

Polish Club Marches in Pulaski Day Parade

A contingent of students from the Polish Club participated in the 74th Annual Philadelphia Pulaski Day Parade on Sunday, October 14. Some of the students were dressed in traditional Polish attire obtained from the Polish National Opera. Vesting Polish Instructor Sister Olga Noetzel, CSFN, and Assistant Professor of Mathematics Sister Marcella Louise Wallowicz, CSFN accompanied the students, while Librarian Lee Carr dressed as the Holy Family Tiger for the parade.
Alum Named Congressional Angel in Adoption

Michaelina Bendig ’95 was named a 2007 Congressional Angel in Adoption in October. Bendig has spent 15 years as an adoption consultant for Adoptions from the Heart (AFTH), a licensed non-profit adoption agency offering domestic and international adoption. Bendig was one of 187 individuals who received the award, created in 1999 by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI). She was selected by US Congressman Jim Gerlach.

Staff and Students Participate in “Light the Night Walk”

Graduate Admissions Counselor Andrea Mirsky, MEd, and Newtown Learning Resource Center Coordinator Kathy Ruppel, MLS led a group of 10 members of the Holy Family Community who participated in the “Light the Night Walk” to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphona Society on September 29. The group raised $546 for the occasion, which consisted of a two-mile walk through lit red, white, and gold balloons, each of which signified family and friends (red), survivors (white), and those who had passed away from a blood cancer related illness (gold).
Author Presents to Packed House

In front of a packed house of students, staff, and community members, local author Allen Hornblum and five of the police officers and burglars mentioned in his book Confessions of a Second Story Man: Junior Kripplebauer and the K&A Gang, recounted the many stories and experiences of the infamous K&A Gang. The presentation, sponsored by the University’s new Graduate Program in Criminal Justice, offered a unique look at what Hornblum called “the best burglary gang on the East Coast from the 1950s through the 1970s.”
Surgical Historian Details Gilded Age Medicine

Ira Rutkow, MD, MPH, DrPH, presented a lecture entitled “Gilded Age Medicine and the Death of President James A. Garfield on Saturday, November 3 in the ETC Auditorium. The program was sponsored by the University and Glen Foerd on the Delaware. Rutkow is a historian of surgery, as well as a clinical professor of surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The topic of his lecture is thoroughly explored in his book, James A. Garfield. Garfield was shot and killed in 1881, and Rutkow detailed how the medical procedures of the time helped to kill him rather than save him.

The office of Career Services offers a pair of events in November to help students learn about procedures for applying to graduate school and job opportunities at a major local business. On Wednesday, November 7, Director of Graduate Admissions Margie Wendling will present to the students in Campus Center Room 115 on how to apply to graduate school. A free lunch will be provided to all students who attend. The following day, students are invited to take a tour and learn about job opportunities at Philadelphia-based Crown, Cork & Seal. Transportation will be provided for all interested students. The tour runs from 11 am – 1 pm and includes a free company lunch. Flu Shots Available

Children’s Book Author to Speak at Newtown

Holy Family-Newtown’s Learning Resource Center, in conjunction with the School of Education, will sponsor a presentation by Peter Catalanotto, renowned author/illustrator of children’s books, on Thursday, November 8 as a part of the University’s celebration of Children’s Book Week. The event is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm in Room 136 at Holy Family-Newtown. Catalanotto will discuss his work and participate in a book signing at the conclusion of the presentation. His books will be on sale by staff from the Newtown Bookstore during the presentation.
Student Filmmakers to Show Documentary of Kenyan Orphanage

Director of Library Services Lori Schwabenbauer, MSLS has invited three Canadian filmmakers to bring their documentary “Letters From Litein” to the University on Tuesday, November 13. The film will be shown at 7 pm in the ETC Auditorium and will be followed by a question and answer session. The documentary tells the story of schoolchildren in Calgary who befriended children in an orphanage in Litein, Kenya by becoming pen pals. The Canadian students raised funds for their friends in Kenya and traveled to Litein to bring supplies to the orphanage. Schwabenbauer spent a summer in Litein in 1982 and helped to lay the concrete foundation for the orphanage.
Hour of Power

Adjunct Nursing Professor Denise Hayes, RN, CRNP, MSN, recently wrote three articles for publication in Nursing Journal. Hayes authored “New Guidelines for Preventing Infective Endocarditis”, which appeared in the August edition, and co-authored an article entitled “Administering Pneumococcal Vaccine” for the September issue. In November’s edition, she will have an article entitled “When Potassium Takes Dangerous Detours” published.

Professor of Education Kathleen Quinn, PhD, recently returned from a trip to Berlin, Germany, where she made multiple presentations at the 15th European Reading Conference. Quinn co-presented on two topics – “Using ‘Read a Latte’ Book Clubs to Motivate Adolescents to Read” (co-presented with adjunct professor Maureen Runyen), and “Establishing Reliability for the Use of Graduate Oral Dictation to Differentiate between Reading Difficulties and Language Issues” (co-presented with Associate Professor of Education Roger Gee, PhD, and Assistant Professor of Education Patricia Duncan, EdD). Quinn also recently co-authored Publication of the Critical Reading Inventory, 2nd Edition, with Tony and Mary D. Applegate.
Five New Employees Join the “Family”

The following employees are new to the University:
Meaghan Crawford joined the staff in Marian Hall in early September as Special Assistant to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement. Crawford earned her bachelor of arts degree in Communications from Neumann College. She previously worked as the Group Marketing and Sales Manager for the Bristol Riverside Theatre.
Jeanne DeVirgiliis was welcomed to the Library staff on September 17. DeVirgiliis serves as the Library’s part-time Circulation Desk Assistant. DeVirgiliis is a graduate of Community College of Philadelphia and worked as an Executive Assistant to the Board of Admissions at the Fox Chase Cancer Center for the past several years.
Paul Gornowski has been hired to fill the Sports Information Director position in the Marketing & Communications office. Gornowski has been the Interim Sports Information Director at Millersville University since 2006. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in Radio and Film from Rowan University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Public Relations.
Stephanie Mongiello ’07 accepted the position of part-time Graduate Resident Director in the Student Services division. Stephanie earned her bachelor of science in Criminal Justice in May and had served Holy Family as a Resident Advisor since the fall of 2006.
David Richards has joined the team in the Maintenance Department. Richards was hired in September as a Maintenance Associate. Prior to coming to Holy Family, Richards was an equipment operator for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

A group of seven graduate students from the School of Education, accompanied by Professor of Education Lynn Orlando, PhD, will present a session at the 19th Annual Bucks County Early Childhood Conference at Bucks County Community College on Saturday, October 6. Dr. Orlando and the students (Courtney Lucas, Diane Gormley, Kathleen Lafferty, Kristin Morris, Deidre Kells, Kristin Boekamp, and Debbie Miller) from the graduate program based at Newtown will be the featured workshop presenters at the Conference, which has hosted as many as 600 educators in past years. Entitled “Creative Literacy Centers for Pre-K to Third Grade,” the presentation will be an interactive session highlighting literacy utilizing four different literacy centers.

Scholarship Recipients and Donors Feted

Approximately 175 members of the Holy Family community were present on Thursday, September 20 for the First Annual Scholarship Stewardship Dinner, held at Torresdale-Frankford Country Club. The University’s numerous scholarship recipients – and the donors who made those scholarships available – were celebrated. The University presented three new scholarship recipients with their awards. Senior Jennifer Hamill was awarded the Carl F. & Elizabeth M. Gregory Scholarship, junior Andrea Carpenter received the Adele Leboy Scholarship for Women in Science, and senior Colleen McEachern was honored with the Southampton Window Cleaning & Janitorial Service Scholarship. In all, 109 scholarship recipients were honored by the University.

The University’s 19th Annual Golf Classic takes place on Wednesday, October 3 at Torresdale-Frankford Country Club. The event is a wonderful opportunity to share some camaraderie and lively competition with friends while helping to fund scholarships for students at Holy Family University. Eighty-five percent of undergraduates receive financial assistance. The day starts with lunch at 11 am and the program is scheduled to run until 8 pm.

The Graduate Program in Counseling Psychology will host its 2007 Counseling Forum on Monday, October 8 from 6-8 pm at Newtown. The presentation will focus on the background and theory for the use of guided imagery in the counseling context, some direct experience with Interactive Guided Imagery, and discussion and questions about both the theory and the experience. The featured presenter is Bob Schoenholtz, MS, a certified practitioner of Interactive Guided Imagery, a registered and board certified art therapist, and a licensed professional counselor in Pennsylvania. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.
Dancing with the Staff Contest

Local Author to Discuss K&A Gang

Former gang members and the Philadelphia detectives who caught them will join acclaimed author and Professor Allen M. Hornblum for a look at the rise and fall of the Kensington and Allegheny (K&A) Gang in a special presentation on Tuesday, October 16 at 7:30 pm in the University’s John Perzel Education & Technology Center. The event is sponsored by the Criminal Justice Graduate Program. Hornblum, a Temple University professor of Urban Studies and author of the book Confessions of a Second Story Man: Junior Kripplebauer and the K&A Gang, explores what made these burglars successful for so long and the methods police used to stop them. Admission is free.
Interim Dean Named Facilitator of the Year

James Higgins, MBA, newly-named Interim Dean of the School of Business Administration, received the MBA Facilitator of the Year Award from the University’s Accelerated Division. Higgins has been a Professor in the School of Business Administration for 15 years and has been a Facilitator for the Accelerated Program for the past five.
Pamela Flynn Art Exhibits to Open in September

Associate Professor of Art Pamela Flynn, MFA, has two exhibitions of her work opening this fall. Her exhibit “The Space in Between” will be featured at the Monmouth University Department of Art & Design’s Rotary Ice House Gallery from September 10 - October 12, with an opening reception scheduled for Friday, September 14. Additionally, Flynn’s work will be on display at New York’s Phoenix Gallery in the “Shoes, Shoes, Shoes” show, which opens on September 5. Part of The Girls Gotta Run Foundation, Inc., the exhibit helps raise money to buy athletic shoes for Ethiopian girls to support their participation in sports and help them continue their formal education.
Adjunct Faculty Member Gives Presentation at Columbia

Mary Elaine Perry, EdD, Adjunct Professor of Counseling Psychology, recently delivered a presentation to 200 development and alumni relations staff and volunteers at Columbia University. Entitled “Generations at Work,” Perry’s talk included information on the four generations currently in the workforce, the characteristics of each generation due to the political and economic climate during their coming-of-age years, and how to motivate and support members of each generation in the work place and as volunteers.
Diana Piperata Attends Dinner with Mayoral Candidates

Counseling Center Director Diana Piperata, PhD, was one of a select group of Philadelphia residents to attend a potluck dinner with the city’s Mayoral candidates. Piperata joined seven other concerned Philadelphians and candidates Michael Nutter and Al Taubenberger for a potluck dinner in South Philadelphia organized by the Philadelphia Inquirer and Great Expectations, the University of Pennsylvania’s Project on Civic Engagement. The group discussed a number of topics pertinent to November’s election, including the difference between the education a student receives in the city’s Catholic schools and the one received in its public schools.

Professor to Deliver Paper in United Kingdom

English Professor Patricia Michael, PhD, will deliver a paper entitled “The Haunting of John Irving: Victorian Appropriations in ‘A Prayer for Owen Meany’” at a conference on Neo-Victorianism: The Politics and Aesthetics of Appropriation. The conference is being hosted by the Centre for Victorian Studies at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom from September 10-12. Michael will be joined by fellow presenters from many countries in Asia and Europe, as well as Australia, Canada, and the United States.
Volleyball Team To Participate in “Digs for Cancer”

The Women’s Volleyball Team will run a fund-raiser during their tri-match on Saturday, October 13. While taking on Post University and Molloy College, the Lady Tigers will battle cancer off the court. The team is taking donations and pledges, and selling shirts to benefit the Susan B. Komen Foundation throughout the day’s matches. The tri-match begins at noon and will run until approximately 6 pm. Holy Family plays at noon and 4 pm. Come out and support the Lady Tigers and their efforts.
Class of 1965 Celebrates Victorian Day

A number of members of the Class of 1965 met in Riverton, NJ on Saturday, June 2 to celebrate Victorian Day. Participating alumni included Fran (Kellagher) Horn, Marianne (Brady) Mark, Mary (Hark) Evangelisto, Helene (Kryszczun) O’Neil, Barbara (Brokowski) Pilborough, Betty Anne (Altman) Zelinsky, and Mary Jane Roberts. The group took a trolley tour, walked around the arts and crafts displays and ate lunch at Café Europa.
Franz-Keller Retires Following Nearly Three Decades of Service

Kathleen Franz-Keller ’68 retired from the Oakland (CA) Housing Authority (OHA) recently after serving 29 years at OHA as the Information Technology Director. Keller attributed her long and successful career to the incredible people within her department, as well as to all the professional and talented co-workers in the other departments at the OHA.
Cardamone-Silvotti Receives Doctorate

Lisa Ann Cardamone-Silvotti ’03 was among 236 students awarded the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. The ceremony was held at the Kimmel Center on June 3.

August 9: The University’s first Summer Language Enrichment Program was featured in the Northeast Times. A partnership between Holy Family and the School District of Philadelphia enabled the project to take place. Twenty students from 12 different countries participated in the six-week program.
August 10: Sylvester Kohut, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, had a letter to the editor published by the Chronicle of Higher Education detailing his perspective on life at Antioch College during the Vietnam War.
August 12: Will Toffling ’07 was featured throughout the day on KYW-1060, AM for his decision to put his nursing career on hold for a year to help victims of Hurricane Katrina rebuild in New Orleans.
Parking Lots Designated for Fall Semester

The Public Safety Office has designated the parking lots on campus for the fall semester. Please adhere to all parking regulations. The ETC parking lot will be reserved for faculty only. You must have a valid faculty hang tag to enter the ETC lot. The parking lots in front and in the rear of Holy Family Hall will be used for faculty and staff on a first-come, first-serve basis. A valid hang tag is needed for admittance to these lots. Any overflow parking from these parking lots will be directed to the parking lots at St. Katherine’s and the Undergraduate Admissions Center. The Campus Center parking lot will be reserved for students. Staff who work in the Campus Center are to park in the lower sports parking lot. Hang tags may be obtained Monday through Friday at the Command Center in Room 101 of the Campus Center. Any questions regarding parking regulations should be directed to Director of Public Safety Joseph McBride at x3642.
Refurbished Cafeteria Opens for Business

The newly-remodeled Tiger Café opened for the school year on August 20, and the Cub Café followed suit on August 29. The Tiger Café is open seven days a week, from 8 am – 7:30 pm Monday-Friday, and from 11 am – 2 pm and 3 - 6:30 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The Cub Café is open Monday-Friday from 8 am – 1:30 pm and 2:30 - 8 pm Monday-Thursday.
Holy Family to Celebrate Constitution Day

The University will once again celebrate the nation’s history during Constitution Day on Monday, September 17. The day-long celebration will begin at 9 am with a video presentation entitled Our Constitution: A Conversation. Other events on campus include an open voter registration booth, lunch, and a recital of the Preamble of the Constitution. The day wraps up at 2 pm when the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth ring the campus bell in conjunction with the Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge as part of the Bells Around the World celebration.
Family Weekend 2007 Filled with Festivities

Family Weekend 2007 is shaping up to be a fun-filled three days for students and their families. Beginning on Friday, September 14 with an evening program at 8 pm, followed by an ice cream social at 9:30 pm, and running through Sunday, there are a number of events scheduled for students and family members of all ages. On Saturday, the University offers a full slate of athletic contests and other daytime events, including a fall festival, flea market, and Locks of Love. Saturday evening Mass will take place at 5:30 pm, followed by the reunion and picnic at 6:30 pm and casino night at 8 pm. On Sunday, the women’s tennis and soccer teams will play home contests to wrap up the weekend.
First Tech Staff Meeting of the School Year Scheduled

Women’s Discussion Group Meetings Scheduled for Fall Semester

Beginning in September, the Counseling Center and Disability Services Office is offering a weekly Women’s Group geared toward addressing a variety of topics unique to female students. Each group will begin with an educational presentation, followed by open discussion and some group activity in which all members can participate. The meetings will be held every Tuesday, beginning September 18, from 12:15-1:15 pm in room 213 of the Campus Center.

Eastern European Sisters to Speak at Holy Family

Holy Family University will welcome six members of the international Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth in early September for a special event titled "Eastern European Women Speak." The sisters are scheduled to speak at 12:30 pm on Wednesday, September 12 and at 7 pm on Thursday, September 13 in the John Perzel Education Technology Center Auditorium on the University's Northeast Philadelphia campus. The University's Mission Effectiveness Team and School of Arts and Sciences have collaborated on the event, which will be simultaneously translated through audio devices in the Auditorium.
BJ's Wholesale Club Representative to be On-Campus

History Professor Travels to Turkey

Mary Carroll Johansen, PhD, Associate Professor of History, spent 10 days in late June and early July traveling through Turkey as part of an interfaith/intercultural trip sponsored by the Philadelphia Dialogue Forum. Johansen and her group visited the cities of Istanbul, Konya, Izmir, and Cappadocia, and had the opportunity to see Ephesus, several mosques, and Fatih University. The goals of the Forum are to build bridges of communication between the United States and Turkey, work toward a sense of community, and foster interfaith dialogue and awareness.
Assistant Athletic Director Earns MBA

Brian Minster, Assistant Director of Athletics/NCAA Compliance Officer, recently earned his MBA from Holy Family. Minster was enrolled in the accelerated program at Woodhaven and completed his MBA in 20 months. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Holy Family as well.
Arts and Sciences Faculty Members Present Research Findings

Jean Kohl, MAT, Professor of English, and Janice Showler, PhD, Chair for Arts & Communications, presented their initial findings for a research grant awarded to them by Pi Lambda Theta (PLT), an international honor society and professional organization for educators, at PLT's Leadership Conference held in Richmond,Virginia, July 25-30, 2007. Entitled "Constructing Scaffolds to Support Literacy Achievement of First-Year Students: Bridging the Gap Between High School and University Expectations" their proposal was awarded one of four research grants given by the honorary society.
Holy Family Welcomes New Employees

Patricia Paluch joined the Institutional Advancement Division as a Data/Research Specialist on May 22. Her most recent work experience has been as an Administrative Assistant for the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Prior to that, Paluch worked as a Secretary for State Farm Insurance Company. Paluch currently is pursuing a degree in Business Administration on a part-time basis at Holy Family University.
Bill Lackman joined the Public Safety Department as a part-time, pool Security Officer on June 4. Lackman was a Philadelphia police officer for 38 years, during which time he worked in the 911 Communications Center.
Jennifer Bona has accepted the position of Admissions Representative at Newtown, effective July 1. Bona comes to Holy Family from Widener University School of Law, where she worked as Assistant Registrar and Database Coordinator since 2005. She also has been employed as an Admissions Assistant by Ursuline College and as a Periodicals Assistant for John Carroll University. Bona holds a master’s of education in Higher Education Administration from Kent State University and a bachelor of arts in Political Science from John Carroll University.
Sister Loretta Wesolowski, CSFN has accepted the position of Division Assistant in the Institutional Advancement Division effective July 1. Sister Loretta comes to Holy Family from the CSFN Development Office, where she was their Administrative Assistant for 12 years. Sister Loretta also was an Instructor of Chemistry at Holy Family University from 1981 until 1994.
Jim Acton has accepted the position of Assistant to the Director of Cooperative Education within the Academic Affairs Division effective July 2. Acton has been with Holy Family since 2005 as an adjunct faculty member in the School of Arts and Sciences. He also has taught the Internship course for Communications and English majors.
Sister Jolanta Kruczek, CSFN has joined the Institutional Advancement Division as Graphic Designer effective July 2. A native of Nowy Sacz, Poland, Sister Jolanta comes to Holy Family from Trinity Mother Frances Health System in Tyler, Texas, where she worked as a Graphic Designer for 15 years. Sister Jolanta also served a five-year term on the Mother Francis Hospital Board, and two terms as the Congregation’s Local Superior.
Michael Sabara has been hired effective July 30 as an Admissions Counselor in the Undergraduate Admissions Office. Sabara graduated in May from La Salle University with a bachelor of arts in Communications. While there, he served as a tour guide in their Admissions Office for three years.
Sister Janice Kobierowski, CSFN began serving Holy Family in the capacity of Assistant Secretary to the University Board of Trustees effective August 1. Sister Janice is a native Philadelphian who has been a member of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth for 56 years. Most of her religious life was spent in community educational ministries as teacher and principal in Massachusetts and Connecticut. From September 2000 to May of 2007, she lived and worked
in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in Texas. Sister received a bachelor’s degree in English from Holy Family College, and a master’s degree in English from Assumption College.
Kathleen Kelly-West joined Holy Family on August 6 as a Nursing Simulation Coordinator within our School of Nursing and Allied Health Professions. Kelly-West has worked as a Nursing Instructor at Montgomery County Community College. She holds a bachelor of science in Nursing from College Misericordia and a master of science in Nursing from Widener University.
Heather Armstrong-Costello, Esquire has accepted the position of part-time Development Writer in the Institutional Advancement Division effective August 27. Heather, an alumnae of Holy Family, teaches as an adjunct in the Criminal Justice program within the School of Arts and Sciences. She also is pursuing a doctorate in Criminal Justice.

Holy Family honored a number of its own at the Alumni Association Awards and Reunion Dinner held at Brookside Manor in Feasterville on May 18.
The Alumni Association bestowed its Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award to John J. Gaittens, MS ’03, Deputy Commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department.
Deborah Chagin, MEd ’70, Director of Literacy Development for the School District of Philadelphia, received the Alumni Educator of the Year Award.
Nelly Greco ’88, a lecturer at Holy Family, was the recipient of the Alumni Service Award.
Beth Ann Swan ’80, PhD, CRNP, FAAN, an Associate Dean and Associate Professor of the Graduate Program at Thomas Jefferson University School of Nursing, was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Nursing Award.

June 11, 2007: Newtown campus Librarian Chris Runowski’s efforts to send rosaries to US Troops were featured in The Bucks County Courier Times in a piece titled “Librarian will send troops spiritual boost”.
July 12, 2007: The University’s efforts to forge ties with China were featured in The Bucks County Courier Times. The piece detailed Holy Family’s ongoing attempts to globalize, citing the recent addition of an academic partnership with Guizhou University in China.
July 25, 2007: Director of Library Services Lori Schwabenbauer organized a Harry Potter party, which was covered by WPVI-TV, Channel 6, and the Northeast Times. The party celebrated the release of the final installment in the popular series of books by author J.K. Rowling.
Professors Travel to Puerto Rico as part of Educational Partnership

University professors accompanied 10 teachers from Sheridan Elementary School to Puerto Rico in late June as part of a language and culture immersion program. Sheridan, located in the city’s Juniata section, has partnered with Holy Family for the past four years in an attempt to better serve their large Hispanic population. This recent trip to Puerto Rico offered Sheridan’s teachers six graduate credits for the completion of the program. Prior to the trip, the teachers took language and culture courses at the University’s Northeast Philadelphia campus.
High School Students Take Advantage of Summer English Program

Twenty students from public high schools around Philadelphia took advantage of a free summer English Language Enrichment Program offered by Holy Family for students who speak English as a second language. The students were on the Northeast Philadelphia campus from Tuesday-Thursday over a four-week stretch in late July and early August from 9 am – 1 pm. University professors and staff helped the students master English through trips, reading assignments, and projects designed to improve reading, writing and speaking skills. The program, run by Adjunct Professor Brenda Hurley, concluded on Wednesday, August 8.
Fitness Center Adds New Equipment

When traffic picks up in the University Fitness Center this fall, the facility’s users will find some new equipment waiting for them. Over the summer, the Fitness Center added a Life Fitness Abdominal and Back Machine and two Nintendo Wii’s. The ab and back machine offers easily adjustable lumbar pads to keep you in the correct position for optimal benefits, allowing the user to effectively improve his/her core. The Nintendo Wii’s will offer a technological approach to fitness, incorporating entertainment and physical activity to provide the user with a unique and fun twist to the routine workout.
University to Offer Classes in Mandarin

The School of Arts and Sciences will offer a class on the Mandarin language this fall. Mandarin is one of the oldest languages in the world and is currently spoken by over 1.4 billion people. Mandarin 101 will be taught by Adjunct Professor Ronald Dempsey, MA. Dempsey has studied in Beijing and Taipei, China and is a non-native Mandarin speaker. The class will feature multidisciplinary methods to engage the students through Chinese culture as well as literacy. The course is open to all students and satisfies Holy Family’s core language requirement.

Faculty members new to the University will be welcomed to Holy Family on Thursday, August 23 at the New Faculty Orientation Brunch. The brunch will begin at 9:30 am in Campus Center 115.
Students Return to Campus
(September, 2007)
Holy Family will welcome its new and returning students back to campus the weekend of August 25-26. On Saturday, August 25, all first-year students arrive to campus. The resident students can participate in a barbeque at the Campus Center Dining Commons at 5 pm. On Sunday, upperclass students return to campus, while the new students participate in their welcome and orientation activities. The fall 2007 semester begins on Wednesday, August 29.
Faculty/Administration/Professional Staff Meeting

The annual Opening Meeting of the new academic year is set for Tuesday, August 28 in the Education and Technology Center. All full-time faculty, administrators, and professional staff are encouraged to attend the meeting, scheduled to begin at 9 am. The meeting is designed to promote the efficient operation of the University by reviewing specific procedural and professional information, and time will be allotted to reflect on the Mission of the University. Lunch will be served in the Campus Center Dining Commons following the meeting, and everyone will be encouraged to have their photo taken for the yearbook from noon – 2 pm at the Campus Center.
Newly Designed Challenge Coins to be Distributed at Opening Liturgy

On Wednesday, September 5, the University will celebrate The Opening Liturgy of the Academic Year. This year’s event will include the distribution of Holy Family University Challenge Coins and the induction of student government officers. The coins, introduced by Father MacNew last year, encourage recipients to live out the University’s mission and have been re-designed to “antique silver” for the 2007-08 school year. Open the year at a great celebration to share Christ in the Eucharist. Mass is scheduled for 12:15 pm in the Campus Center.
Holy Family Welcomes New Academic Advisor

Brittany Iveson will join the Academic Advising Center on May 21 as an Academic Advisor. Prior to joining Holy Family, Iveson worked as a Tutor and a Psychology Peer Advisor at James Madison University and as a Merchandising/Buying/Operations Intern for Karmaloop, LLC. She was also a Marine Mammal Intern for Walt Disney World’s The Living Seas. Most recently, Iveson served as an Admission Counselor and a First-year Advisor at Lasell College in Newton, Maryland. Iveson holds a bachelor of science degree from James Madison University with a major in psychology and a minor in human resources and development.

Dr. Kathryn Van Dyke Hayes and Dr. Leticia Diaz were recently awarded the Golden Toga Senatorial Award for outstanding service to the Holy Family Faculty Senate. Dr. Van Dyke Hayes is a Professor in the School of Nursing. She currently chairs the Contract Committee and is a past President of the Faculty Senate. Dr. Diaz is an Assistant Professor of Spanish in the School of Arts and Sciences.
