Accelerated Students Participate in Global Seminar (8/14/2007)
Six members of Holy Family’s Accelerated Degree Program, based out of Woodhaven, trekked to London, England this past summer to participate in the Global Seminar Study Abroad trip, giving the students the opportunity to study international business and cultural issues of the United Kingdom. The trip represented a three-credit undergraduate or graduate course for the four students.

The Global Seminar is designed to give students an in-depth, hands-on account of the issues facing multinational companies, as well as the changing cultural climate of the host country. The trip generally alternates between London and Dublin, Ireland.

Philip Moore, Assistant Vice President for Extended Learning at Woodhaven, and Don Lonergan, Northmarq Advisors Senior Vice President, were the facilitators for the Holy Family group, which included students Yvonne Vega, Rod Gowans, Darryl Howard, and Brenda Pawlak. The group visited Grosvenor – a company which specializes in investing in and managing large-scale real estate development projects; Kingfisher – Europe’s leading home improvement retail group; Lloyd’s of London – a corporate insurance company founded in 1688; and the University of London.

The class did not physically meet until the one-week trip, so the students and facilitators made good use of the Blackboard tool on the University’s Web site prior to leaving for London to exchange information and complete course assignments. The students did some preparation work before leaving, visited the aforementioned sites during their one-week stay, and wrote a research paper upon their return home. During their time in London, they were required to use London’s Public Transportation System, participate in a scavenger hunt, and visit museums and historical sites. These cultural activities were designed to help the students understand “what it means to be British.”
