"Faces of Motherhood" On Display in Art Gallery (1/4/2013)
The Holy Family University Art Gallery is pleased to present “Faces of Motherhood,” an exhibition of paintings by Sarah Nguyen. The exhibit opens on Friday, January 11, and runs through January 30. An opening reception and meet and greet with the artist will take place on Tuesday, January 22, from 6-8 pm.

The exhibit consists of 24 self-portraits, as well as portraits of mothers with children. Faces of Motherhood is a collaboration between Sarah Nguyen and her young children, who took close-up photographs of her, which she then rendered in paint—starting with a realistic painting, then slowly dissolving the image using linseed oil and turpentine, then rebuilding it.

The process of allowing gravity, chemical interaction, and chance to take over the painting mirrors the “letting go” mothers go through over the fates of their children as they mature, and the anxiety that they experience in ceding control. Her paintings, subjects, and technique honor the conflicted lives of mothers, and the uncertainty and doubt in which they live.

Sarah Nguyen’s art has appeared in over 20 solo and group exhibits throughout the U.S., including galleries in Chicago, Philadelphia, Kansas City, and New York. She is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, and earned her MFA in painting from University of the Arts. Currently, she teaches painting and illustration at the University of Central Missouri.
